uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-endofstory

וַיַּ֣עַל שָׁא֔וּל מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים הָלְכ֥וּ לִמְקוֹמָֽם

and=he/it_ascended Shāʼūl from,pursuing Pelishtim and,Philistines went to,place_of,their_own

Here the author is concluding the story of this battle with the Philistines. Your language may have its own way of ending an episode of a story.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיַּ֣עַל שָׁא֔וּל מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים

and=he/it_ascended Shāʼūl from,pursuing Pelishtim

The author assumes that readers will understand that Saul returned to his home city of Gibeah. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Then Saul went up to Gibeah from after the Philistines] or [Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines and returned home to Gibeah]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / events

וַיַּ֣עַל שָׁא֔וּל מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים

and=he/it_ascended Shāʼūl from,pursuing Pelishtim

The author is describing one event before describing another event that preceded it. In your translation, you may wish to relate these events in the order in which they happened. Alternate translation: [Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines and returned home to Gibeah]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
