OET (OET-RV) But Yonatan hadn’t heard his father’s oath, so he dipped his staff into the honeycomb and ate some honey and felt rejuvenated.

הַמַּטֶּה֙
the,staff
By staff, the author may be referring to a spear that Jonathan was carrying, as he describes in [13:22](../13/22.md). The term he uses can have that meaning, and the focus here may be on the wooden shaft of the spear, which Jonathan would have used to reach for this honey, rather than on the metal point. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [the spear]

וַיִּטְבֹּ֥ל אוֹתָ֖הּ בְּיַעְרַ֣ת הַדְּבָ֑שׁ
and,dipped DOM,it in/on/at/with,honeycomb_of the,honey
The author seems to mean that Jonathan reached up into a tree to get honey from a honeycomb, since Jonathan could simply have picked up honey off the ground with his hands. Alternate translation: [and he reached up into a tree and used it to scoop some honey out of one of the honeycombs]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וַיָּ֤שֶׁב יָדוֹ֙ אֶל־פִּ֔יו
and,put his/its=hand to/towards mouth_of,his
The author seems to mean that Jonathan used his hand to bring the end of his staff back to his mouth so that he could eat the honey it had collected, as Jonathan himself says in [14:43](../14/43.md). To eat the honey, Jonathan would have held the staff with his hand near the honey-covered end of it, so in that sense he was returning his hand to his mouth. Alternate translation: [And he pulled the staff back and ate some honey off the end of it”

The author is using the brightening of Jonathan’s eyes by association to mean that eating the honey restored his strength. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [and this restored some of his strength]
14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
