uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ & כִּלְבָבֶֽךָ

in/on/at/with,heart_of,your & as,heart_of,your

The armor-bearer is speaking of Jonathan’s heart as if it were a container for his thoughts and desires. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [what you want to do … in whatever you want to do]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

נְטֵ֣ה לָ֔ךְ & עִמְּךָ֖

inclines to/for=you(fs) & with,you

The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [Turn yourself in whatever direction you wish … I am with you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

נְטֵ֣ה לָ֔ךְ & עִמְּךָ֖

inclines to/for=you(fs) & with,you

The armor-bearer is using two common expressions of his culture. The expression turn yourself describes whatever course of action a person considers best. For with you, see how you translated the similar expression in [3:19](../03/19.md). Your language may have comparable expressions that you could use in your translation. You could also use plain language. Alternate translation: [Take whatever course of action you consider best … I will help you]

Note 4 topic: writing-politeness

הִנְנִ֥י

here,I

The armor-bearer is using a polite expression to express his willingness to serve. See how you translated similar expressions in [3:4](../03/04.md) and [12:3](../12/03.md). Your language may have a comparable expression that you could use in your translation. You could also use plain language. Alternate translation: [I am at your service] or [I am making myself available]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
