OET (OET-RV)Then Sha’ul asked Israel’s God Yahweh, “Show us the truth.” And Sha’ul and Yonatan were selected—not the people.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-textvariants

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֗וּל אֶל־יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָ֣בָה תָמִ֑ים

and=he/it_said Shāʼūl to/towards YHWH god_of Yisrael come=now! perfectly

The ULT follows the reading of the traditional Hebrew text. One ancient version read instead, “Then Saul said, ‘Yahweh, God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, Yahweh, God of Israel, give Urim, but if this guilt is in thy people Israel, give Thummim.’“ The ephod that Ahijah was wearing, as [14:3](../14/03.md) describes, contained two stones called Urim and Thummim that were used in decision-making. (See [Exodus 28:30](../exo/28/30.md).) If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If not, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

הָ֣בָה תָמִ֑ים

come=now! perfectly

This is an imperative, but it communicates a polite request rather than a command. Use a form in your language that communicates a polite request. Alternate translation: [Please give a perfect one]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

הָ֣בָה תָמִ֑ים

come=now! perfectly

Saul is using the adjective perfect as a noun to describe a particular type of object, a thrown lot of perfect accuracy. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you can translate this with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [Please make this lot accurately indicate the guilty person]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וַיִּלָּכֵ֧ד יוֹנָתָ֛ן וְשָׁא֖וּל

and,taken Yōnātān/(Jonathan) and,Saul

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form. Alternate translation: [And the lot indicated Jonathan and Saul]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְהָעָ֥ם יָצָֽאוּ

and,the,people cleared

The author is using a common expression of his culture that means the lot did not indicate the people. Alternate translation: [but the lot did not indicate any the other soldiers]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:41 Casting sacred lots involved the Urim and Thummim (Exod 28:30; Lev 8:8), which David also used when soliciting God’s guidance (1 Sam 23:2; 30:8; 2 Sam 2:1). The Urim and Thummim were two small objects (perhaps flat stones, sticks, or arrows) that may have been cast like dice. They would provide a positive answer, a neutral response, or a negative answer.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
