OET (OET-LV)And_reported to_Shāʼūl to_say there the_troops [are]_sinning to/for_YHWH by_eating with the_blood and_he/it_said you_all_have_acted_treacherously roll to_me the_day a_stone great.

OET (OET-RV)Then King Sha’ul was told, “Look, the people are sinning against Yahweh by eating meat with the blood still in it.”
¶ “You’ve all acted treacherously,” he responded, “Now, roll a big stone over to me.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) by eating with the blood

(Some words not found in UHB: and,reported to,Saul to=say see/lo/see! the,troops sinning to/for=YHWH by,eating on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,blood and=he/it_said dealt_treacherously roll to=me the=day stone large )

This was a violation of the Law which was given to Moses for the nation of Israel. This can be made explicit. Alternate translation: “by eating meat without draining the blood first as required by the law”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

(Occurrence 0) You have acted unfaithfully

(Some words not found in UHB: and,reported to,Saul to=say see/lo/see! the,troops sinning to/for=YHWH by,eating on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,blood and=he/it_said dealt_treacherously roll to=me the=day stone large )

Saul is accusing his whole army of acting unfaithfully though this is a generalization because not every soldier acted unfaithfully.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) Now, roll a big stone here to me

(Some words not found in UHB: and,reported to,Saul to=say see/lo/see! the,troops sinning to/for=YHWH by,eating on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,blood and=he/it_said dealt_treacherously roll to=me the=day stone large )

The stone would hold the animals up and make it easier to drain the blood from them.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
