OET (OET-RV)Then King Sha’ul was told, “Look, the people are sinning against Yahweh by eating meat with the blood still in it.”
¶ “You’ve all acted treacherously,” he responded, “Now, roll a big stone over to me.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ לְשָׁאוּל֙

and,reported to,Saul

Here the author is not using the pronoun they to refer to specific people. Use an expression for this that would be natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Then someone declared to Saul] or [Then Saul was told]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עַל־הַדָּ֑ם

by,eating on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,blood

The Israelite soldiers are leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [by eating meat with the blood still in it]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

בְּגַדְתֶּ֔ם

dealt_treacherously

Saul means that the people have not been faithful to their covenant with Yahweh, which forbade eating meat with blood still in it. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [You have not been faithful to our covenant with Yahweh, which forbids us to eat meat with blood still in it]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / extrainfo

גֹּֽלּוּ־אֵלַ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם אֶ֥בֶן גְּדוֹלָֽה

roll to=me the=day stone large

Since the story indicates in the next verse the purpose for which Saul wanted this great stone, in your translation, you do not need to indicate that purpose here.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

הַיּ֖וֹם

the=day

See how you translated the term today in in [9:13](../09/13.md). Alternate translation: [right away]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
