OET (OET-LV)And_struck_down in/on/at/with_men_of Bēyt Shemesh if/because they_had_looked in/on/at/with_ark_of YHWH and_struck_down in/on/at/with_persons seventy man fifty thousand man and_mourned the_people if/because YHWH he_had_struck in/on/at/with_people a_blow great[fn]

6:19 OSHB note: BHS has been faithful to the Leningrad Codex where there might be a question of the validity of the form and we keep the same form as BHS.

OET (OET-RV)But some Beyt-Shemesh men looked into Yahweh’s box, and he killed seventy[fn] of them. The people mourned because Yahweh had caused such devastation among the people.

6:19 TC: The oldest Hebrew text has 50,070 men being killed here, making it hard to imagine how that many men kept clambering over dead bodies to look into the sacred chest. (But possibly we’re not understanding the situation correctly?) We have followed later manuscripts here.

uW Translation Notes:

וַיַּ֞ךְ בְּאַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֗מֶשׁ כִּ֤י רָאוּ֙ בַּאֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה

and,struck_down in/on/at/with,men_of house_of -shemesh that/for/because/then/when looked in/on/at/with,ark_of YHWH

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [But because they looked into the Box of Yahweh, he struck among the men of Beth Shemesh]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וַיַּ֞ךְ בְּאַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֗מֶשׁ & וַיַּ֤ךְ בָּעָם֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִ֔ישׁ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֑ישׁ & הָעָ֔ם

and,struck_down in/on/at/with,men_of house_of -shemesh & and,struck_down in/on/at/with,persons seventy (a)_man fifty thousand (a)_man & the,people

See how you translated the term struck in [4:2](../04/02.md). Alternate translation: [But he killed some of the men of Beth Shemesh … And he killed 70 men, 50,000 men, among the people]

Note 3 topic: translate-textvariants

שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִ֔ישׁ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֑ישׁ

seventy (a)_man fifty thousand (a)_man

Most Hebrew manuscripts, including the most ancient ones, have the reading that the ULT follows here. A few manuscripts read simply “70 men,” and some modern versions follow that reading, since it seems to fit the Hebrew grammar better. It also suits the historical context better, since Beth Shemesh was only a town. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

בָּעָם֙ & וַיִּֽתְאַבְּל֣וּ & כִּֽי־הִכָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בָּעָ֖ם מַכָּ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה

in/on/at/with,persons & and,mourned & that/for/because/then/when struck YHWH in/on/at/with,people slaughter great

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [And because Yahweh had struck a great striking among the people, the people mourned]

Note 5 topic: writing-poetry

בָּעָם֙ & הִכָּ֧ה & בָּעָ֖ם מַכָּ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה

in/on/at/with,persons & struck & in/on/at/with,people slaughter great

For emphasis, the author is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis. Alternate translation: [had killed so many people]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:19 seventy men: Beth-shemesh was a small village.
• because they looked into the Ark: Physical contact with the Ark was prohibited (Num 4:15; 2 Sam 6:6-8), as was looking inside it (Num 4:20). Those who were killed lacked reverence for God’s holiness.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
