OET (OET-RV)But some Beyt-Shemesh men looked into Yahweh’s box, and he killed seventy[fn] of them. The people mourned because Yahweh had caused such devastation among the people.

6:19 TC: The oldest Hebrew text has 50,070 men being killed here, making it hard to imagine how that many men kept clambering over dead bodies to look into the sacred chest. (But possibly we’re not understanding the situation correctly?) We have followed later manuscripts here.

BrTrAnd the sons of Jechonias were not pleased with the men of Bæthsamys, because they saw the ark of the Lord; and the Lord smote among them seventy men, and fifty thousand men: and the people mourned, because the Lord had inflicted on the people a very great plague.

ULTAnd he struck among the men of Beth Shemesh because they had looked in the Box of Yahweh. And he struck 50,070 men among the people. And the people mourned because Yahweh had stricken a great blow among the people.[fn]

Instead of 50,070 men, a few later copies and modern versions have, 70 men.

USTBut some men from Bethshemesh looked into Yahweh’s sacred chest, and because of that, Yahweh caused 50, 070 of them to die. Then the people mourned very much because Yahweh punished those men like that.

BSB  § But God struck down some of the people of Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men,[fn] and the people mourned because the LORD had struck them with a great slaughter.

6:19 A few late Hebrew manuscripts and Josephus; most Hebrew manuscripts 70 men and 50,000 men; LXX 70 men and 50,000 men of the people; Syriac and Arabic 70 men and 5,000 men; alternately, possibly 70 men and 50 oxen

OEBThe descendents of Jechoniah, however, did not rejoice with the men of Beth-shemesh, when they welcomed the ark of the Lord. So he killed seventy of them, and the people mourned because the Lord had struck the people with such a great slaughter.

WEBBEHe struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the LORD’s ark, he struck fifty thousand and seventy of the men. Then the people mourned, because the LORD had struck the people with a great slaughter.

WMBB (Same as above)

NETBut the Lord struck down some of the people of Beth Shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the Lord; he struck down 50,070 of the men. The people grieved because the Lord had struck the people with a hard blow.

LSVAnd He strikes among the men of Beth-Shemesh, for they looked into the Ark of YHWH, indeed, He strikes seventy men [out] of fifty thousand men [[or fifty thousand and seventy men]] among the people; and the people mourn, because YHWH struck among the people [with] a great striking.

FBVBut God killed some of the people of Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the Ark of the Lord. He killed seventy,[fn] and the people mourned deeply because the Lord had killed so many.

6:19 Some manuscripts appear to read 50,070, but this is an improbably large figure for a small settlement.

T4TBut seventy men from Beth-Shemesh looked into Yahweh’s sacred chest, and because of that, Yahweh caused them to die. Then the people mourned very much because Yahweh punished [IDM] those men like that.

LEBHe[fn] struck seventy men[fn] among the men of Beth Shemesh because they looked into the ark of Yahweh. So the people mourned because Yahweh had struck a great blow among the people.

6:19 That is, Yahweh

6:19 Though the MT has “seventy men, fifty thousand men” (= 50,070), it is likely the original was “seventy men”

BBEBut the Lord sent destruction on seventy men of the people of Beth-shemesh for looking into the ark of the Lord; and great was the sorrow of the people for the destruction which the Lord had sent on them.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:19 seventy men: Beth-shemesh was a small village.
• because they looked into the Ark: Physical contact with the Ark was prohibited (Num 4:15; 2 Sam 6:6-8), as was looking inside it (Num 4:20). Those who were killed lacked reverence for God’s holiness.
