ULTbecause formerly you were darkness, but now are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

USTRemember that before you believed in the Lord Jesus, you did not know what was true, just as people who are in a dark place do not know what is around them. But now it is as though you have come out into the light, because the Lord has shown to you what is true. So live in the way that the Lord has shown to you.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:8 Darkness is ignorance of God and his ways and being dominated by sin (see 4:18).
• Light from the Lord is Christ’s good news (see John 8:12). As people of light, believers live in fellowship with God, in whom there is no darkness (see 1 Jn 1:5-7; 5:9; cp. Matt 5:14-16; John 8:12; 12:35-36, 46; Rom 13:12; 2 Cor 6:14; 1 Thes 5:4-8; 1 Pet 2:9).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἦτε γάρ ποτε σκότος

˱you_all˲_were for once darkness

Just as one cannot see in the dark, so people who love to sin cannot see or understand the things of God. Alternate translation: [because formerly you did not understand anything about God] See the UST.

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γάρ

for

The connecting word because introduces a reason-result relationship. The result is stated first (v.7): that the Ephesian believers should not become partners with evil men. The reason is stated second (v. 8): that the Ephesian believers are no longer darkness, but are now light. Use a phrase in your language that connects a reason to a result, using the order that is most natural for your language.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

νῦν δὲ φῶς ἐν Κυρίῳ

now but light in /the/_Lord

Just as one can see in the light, so people whom God has saved understand how to please God. Alternate translation: [but now you know God and can live for him] See the UST.

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

δὲ

but

The connecting word but introduces a contrast relationship. The fact that the Ephesian believers were formerly darkness is in contrast to the fact that they are now light.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὡς τέκνα φωτὸς περιπατεῖτε

as children ˱of˲_light /be/_walking

To Walk on a path is a metaphor for how a person lives his life. Alternate translation: [Live as people who understand what the Lord wants them to do]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς τέκνα φωτὸς

as children ˱of˲_light

God desires us to imitate or follow him since we are his spiritual children. Alternate translation: [as God’s children who know the truth] or [because you are God’s children and see the truth]
