TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:28 Jerusalem: See study note on 15:8.
• Kiriath: The Kiriath-jearim of 18:14 belonged to Judah; another town with this name might have existed but is otherwise unknown. The word Kiriath here was probably originally followed by a word that has been lost in the process of copying.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְהַיְבוּסִ֨י

and,the,Jebus

The author is using the term Jebusite by association to mean the city in which the Jebusite people group lived. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “and the city of the Jebusites”

Note 2 topic: writing-background

הִ֤יא יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙

she/it Yerushalayim

The author is providing background information to help readers understand that the city of the Jebusites is the one they know as Jerusalem. In your translation, present this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
