ULTBut it will be a witness between us and between you and between our generations after us, to serve the service of Yahweh before his face, with our burnt up offerings and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings. And your sons will not say to our sons tomorrow, “There is no portion for you in Yahweh.” ’

USTInstead, we want it to be a monument to prove to you, to ourselves, and to all of our descendants after us, that we truly worship Yahweh. We indeed worship him by our burned sacrifices and our offerings, and our offerings to promise friendship with him. We built this altar so your descendants may never say to our descendants in the future, “Yahweh never gave you any portion of this land; you do not belong here.” ’

BSBRather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

22:27 The altar near the bank of the Jordan would stand as a memorial (literally witness) through the generations that the eastern tribes were also part of Israel.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

עֵ֨ד ה֜וּא בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶ֗ם

witness he/it between,us and,between,you_all

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: “but as a witness between us and the western tribes”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

דֹּרוֹתֵינוּ֮

generations,our

The eastern representatives are using the pronoun our to refer to their generations and those of their listeners, so use the inclusive form of that pronoun if your language marks that distinction.

Note 3 topic: writing-poetry

לַעֲבֹ֞ד אֶת עֲבֹדַ֤ת יְהוָה֙

that,perform DOM service YHWH

For emphasis, the eastern representatives are using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis. Alternate translation: “to serve Yahweh diligently”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לְפָנָ֔יו

in,presence,his

The representatives of the eastern tribes are using the term face by association to mean the presence of someone. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “in his presence” or “at the tent of meeting”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

וְלֹא יֹאמְר֨וּ בְנֵיכֶ֤ם מָחָר֙ לְבָנֵ֔ינוּ אֵין לָכֶ֥ם חֵ֖לֶק בַּיהוָֽה

and=not say children,your_all's in_the_future to,children,our not to/for=you_all portion in/on/at/with,LORD

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: “That way their descendants would not tell our descendants in the future that they had no portion in Yahweh”
