BrTrAnd we said, If ever it should come to pass that they should speak so to us, or to our posterity hereafter; then shall they say, Behold the likeness of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for the sake of burnt-offerings, nor for the sake of meat-offerings, but it is a witness between you and us, and between our sons.

ULTAnd we said, ‘And it will happen, if they speak to us, or to our generations tomorrow, that we will say, “See, a copy of the altar of Yahweh that our fathers made, not for a burnt offering and not for a sacrifice, but it is a witness between us and between you.”

USTIn the future, if your descendants said that, then our descendants could tell them to look at the altar that we, their ancestors, had made. They would see that it was exactly like the altar at Yahweh’s sacred tent. Our descendants would tell them that they do not burn sacrifices on it, but it is a monument that proves that Israelites on both sides of the Jordan River worship Yahweh.

BSBTherefore we said ‘If they ever say [this] to us or to our descendants we will answer: Look at the replica of the altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’

MSB (Same as above)

OEBIf ever that is claimed to us or to our descendants in time to come, we thought the answer would be, “There is the replica of the altar of the Lord, the replica made by our ancestors, though not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice. It stands as a witness between us and you!”

WEBBE“Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of the LORD’s altar, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.” ’

WMBB (Same as above)

NETWe said, ‘If in the future they say such a thing to us or to our descendants, we will reply, “See the model of the Lord’s altar that our ancestors made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a reminder to us and you.” ’

LSVAnd we say, And it has been, when they say [so] to us, and to our generations hereafter, that we have said, See the pattern of the altar of YHWH, which our fathers made—not for burnt-offering nor for sacrifice—but it [is] a witness between us and you.

FBVIf they were to do so in the future, our descendants could reply, ‘Look at this copy of the Lord's altar which our forefathers made, not for burnt offerings or for sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’

T4T“In the future, if your descendants say that, our descendants can say, ‘Look at the altar that our ancestors made! It is exactly like Yahweh’s altar that our ancestors built, but we do not burn sacrifices on it. It only shows that we are Israelis!’

DRAAnd if they will say so, they shall answer them: Behold the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for holocausts, nor for sacrifice, but for a testimony between us and you.

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [And we decided that if they spoke to us or to our descendants in the future, we would show them that this was a copy of Yahweh’s altar, not for offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and them]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֲבוֹתֵ֗ינוּ

fathers_of,our

The eastern representatives are speaking as if our fathers were the actual fathers of the current generation of Israelites. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [our ancestors]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

לֹ֤א לְעוֹלָה֙ וְלֹ֣א לְזֶ֔בַח

not for,burnt_offerings and=not for,sacrifice

The eastern representatives are not referring to specific offerings or sacrifices. They mean these things in general. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using plural forms. Alternate translation: [not for burnt offerings or sacrifices]
