TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:38-39 Prayer (1:35) equipped Jesus to preach, teach, heal, and cast out demons.
• Jesus’ mission in Galilee centered on preaching in the synagogues, where he took the opportunity to speak (1:21; Luke 4:16-30). Paul later used this same opportunity (Acts 13:5, 14-15; 14:1; 16:13; 17:1).
• Jesus counted on Jewish hospitality when he traveled (cp. Mark 6:10; Gen 18:1-8; 19:1-8; Luke 10:7; Heb 13:2; 3 Jn 1:5-8).
• The region of Galilee was roughly forty miles north to south and twenty-five miles east to west (sixty-five by forty kilometers). In Jesus’ day, Galilee was ruled by Herod Antipas.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

ἦλθεν κηρύσσων & εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν

˱he˲_came proclaiming & in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ ἦλθεν κηρύσσων εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς αὐτῶν εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλων)

Mark is referring to Jesus to represent both Jesus and his disciples, who traveled with Jesus. However, it was only Jesus who was preaching and casting out demons. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [he, along with his disciples, went in all Galilee, and he was preaching]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἦλθεν

˱he˲_came

In a context such as this, your language might say “came” instead of went. Alternate translation: [he went]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

τὰς συναγωγὰς αὐτῶν

the synagogues ˱of˲_them

The pronoun their refers to the Jewish people living in Galilee. If this is not clear for your readers, you could refer to these people more directly. Alternate translation: [the Jewish synagogues] or [the synagogues in that area]
