TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:1-11 In the midst of their persecution, Paul encourages the Philippians to be united and to live a humble life like Christ.

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

The Christ Hymn: Christ’s Divine Nature

Philippians 2:6-11, often called the Christ Hymn, reveals early Christian beliefs about the nature of Jesus Christ. This hymn affirms that the early Christians believed in the preexistence and divine nature of Christ (see also Col 1:15-20; 2:9; cp. John 1:1-2; Heb 1:1-3). Christ is not simply another human prophet. He was present with God the Father from the very beginning, and he is the one through whom the universe was created. As the Son of God, he shares the nature of God himself. This claim was a major point of contention between Jesus and the religous leaders, who accused Jesus of blasphemy (John 5:16-18; 8:54-59; 10:30-39).

The hymn also affirms that Jesus Christ came to earth in an act of immense humility—the infinite God became human (Phil 2:7; see Col 1:15; John 1:10-14; Heb 2:14, 17). Jesus Christ, the glorious Creator of the universe, died as a sacrificial offering for the sins of human beings so that we might be forgiven and be reconciled to God (Phil 2:8; see John 3:14-17; Rom 5:9-10; Col 1:20, 22; 2:13-14; Heb 1:3; 10:9-14), as the Scriptures had foretold (see Isa 53:3-12).

This hymn also affirms that God raised Jesus from the dead, has given him “the place of highest honor” in heaven (Phil 2:9), and conferred on him the title “Lord” (2:11; cp. Col 1:18). One day, all created beings will bow before him and acknowledge that he is Lord of the entire universe (Phil 2:9-11), deserving of the worship that God alone is worthy to receive (see Rev 5:8-14).

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:27–2:11: Paul encouraged the Philippians to live as true followers of Christ

Paul encouraged the Philippians to act as believers should, to agree with each other and to be courageous when they spoke to other people about Christ. Since they lived among many people who were opposed to the gospel, they should expect to defend their faith. They should also expect to suffer because they trusted in Christ.

Paragraph 2:9–11

After Christ had obediently humbled himself, God exalted Christ and gave him the highest possible honor and authority. By using this example, Paul implied that God would also honor those of his people who obediently humbled themselves.

2:11a

and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord: 2:11a repeats the same basic meaning that is in 2:10a but uses a different figure of speech. It means that everyone will acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the supreme Lord over all creation. In order to honor Jesus two things will happen: everyone will bow to Jesus Christ as Lord and everyone will say that Jesus Christ is Lord.

In some languages this requires a direct quote. For example:

everybody will say, “Jesus Christ is Lord of all”

everyone will say, “Jesus Christ is the one who rules us(incl).”

every tongue: The phrase every tongue is a figure of speech that represents every created being that is able to think and speak. It is parallel to the phrase “every knee” in 2:10a.

confess: Here confess means “to say something openly and publicly.” It means to acknowledge something that is true, or to tell others something you know that is true. The word confess here does not mean to confess sin.

This does not mean that everyone will happily or gladly acknowledge Jesus as Lord. But God will force Satan and all who previously have refused to acknowledge Jesus as Lord to admit that Jesus is Lord.

2:11b

to the glory of God the Father.

to the glory of God the Father: People will say “Jesus Christ is Lord,” and by saying this they will give glory to God, the Father of Jesus Christ. The statement “Jesus Christ is Lord” will not mean that Jesus is taking glory away from the Father. He has the lordship (authority) that the Father has given him. Jesus will be Lord of all creation but will still be under the authority of his Father, God. This is God’s plan, and so this will glorify God the Father.

There are several possible ways to translate the phrase to the glory of God the Father. For example:

…and therefore all people will praise our(incl) Father, God.

…and this will result in people saying that God the Father is very, very great.

…and his Father, God, will receive honor when this happens.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί πάσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρός)

Paul uses the word tongue to represent the mouth and what comes out of the mouth. Paul is describing what is said by associating it with the tongue. If this is not clear in your language, you could use an equivalent expression, or use plain language. Alternate translation: [every mouth will declare] or [every being will say] or [everyone will say]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρὸς

to ˓the˒_glory ˱of˲_God (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί πάσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρός)

The word to expresses result. Alternate translation: [with the result that God the Father will be honored]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρὸς

to ˓the˒_glory ˱of˲_God (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί πάσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρός)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of glory, you can express the idea behind the abstract noun glory by using a verbal form of this word or by some other way. Alternate translation: [and honor God the Father]
