22:14 Blessed are those: In response to the connection between actions and ultimate results (22:12), the seventh blessing of Revelation (see also 1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; 22:7) promises acceptance for those who wash their robes—those who have been purified by trusting in Christ and following him faithfully (3:5; 6:11; 7:9-10, 14; 19:13; Eph 5:26; Heb 10:22).

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Blessed are those who wash their robes,

Blessed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Blessed describes a person who is a good situation. In the Bible, the good situation results from God showing favor/kindness to the person. See how you translated this word in 22:7.

those who wash their robes: There is a textual issue in 22:14a: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the text the ones washing their robes (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the text the ones doing his commandments (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT recommends it. This phrase refers figuratively to becoming clean from their sins. The blood of Jesus cleansed them (7:14).

In some languages a literal translation would not indicate the figurative meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

Literally: “those who wash their robes.”

wash their robes: This phrase implies that the robes were dirty. For example:

Jesus is speaking as if people who repent of their sins and start living in a way that pleases God are literally washing their robes. See how you translated the similar expression in [7:14](../07/14.md).

Other ancient manuscripts read “the ones doing his commandments.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of ULT.
