TSNTyndale Study Notes:

23:1-29 Thanks to informants (23:7, 13), Saul was able to stay on David’s trail. David also had informants, allowing him to keep one step ahead of Saul (23:1, 9, 15, 25). David’s chief advantage was access to divine guidance and resources (23:2, 4, 12), which Saul lacked.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתְחַבֵּ֣א שָׁ֔ם

which/who hides there

It might seem that the expression where he hides himself there contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you can shorten it. Alternate translation: [where he hides himself]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

נָכ֔וֹן

sure_information

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [information that you have confirmed]

Note 3 topic: translate-numbers

בְּכֹ֖ל אַלְפֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה

in/on/at/with,all_of thousands_of Yehuda

See how you translated this expression in [10:19](../10/19.md). Alternate translation: [all of the clans of Judah]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּכֹ֖ל אַלְפֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה

in/on/at/with,all_of thousands_of Yehuda

Saul is using the term thousands, meaning clans, by association to mean the territory where these clans lived. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [the territory of all of the clans of Judah]
