TSNTyndale Study Notes:

25:1-44 This episode about Nabal falls between two accounts in which Saul pursued David and David spared Saul’s life. Nabal was similar to Saul.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-oathformula

חַי־יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

he/it_lived YHWH god_of Yisrael

Following the custom of his culture, David iis swearing an oath by guaranteeing it by something he holds sacred. Use a natural way in your language to express an oath. Alternate translation: [I swear by Yahweh, the God of Israel]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

מֵהָרַ֖ע אֹתָ֑ךְ

from,harming DOM,you

By harming, David means causing Abigail great loss and sorrow by killing her husband and the men of her household. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [from causing you great loss and sorrow]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

מִהַ֗רְתְּ וַתָּבֹאת֙

quickly (Some words not found in UHB: and,surely he/it_lived YHWH god_of Yisrael which/who restrained,me from,harming DOM,you that/for/because/then/when if_~_not quickly and,come to,meet,me that/for/because/then/when if left to,Nabal until light the,morning one_urinating in/on/at/with,wall )

This expression conveys a single idea by using two words connected with and. The word hurried tells in what way Abigail came. Alternate translation: [you had hurriedly come]

Note 4 topic: writing-oathformula

כִּ֣י אִם־נוֹתַ֧ר לְנָבָ֛ל עַד־א֥וֹר הַבֹּ֖קֶר מַשְׁתִּ֥ין בְּקִֽיר

that/for/because/then/when that/for/because/then/when if left to,Nabal until light the,morning one_urinating in/on/at/with,wall

David is referring to the oath he made in verse 22. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could indicate this explicitly. Alternate translation: [that I would have kept my oath not to leave to Nabal until the light of the morning one pissing against the wall]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

אִם־נוֹתַ֧ר לְנָבָ֛ל & מַשְׁתִּ֥ין בְּקִֽיר

if left to,Nabal & one_urinating in/on/at/with,wall

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [I would not have left to Nabal one pissing against the wall]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מַשְׁתִּ֥ין בְּקִֽיר

one_urinating in/on/at/with,wall

David is using this expression by association to mean any male person. See how you translated the same expression in [25:22](../25/22.md). Alternate translation: [even one male person]
