TSNTyndale Study Notes:

25:1-44 This episode about Nabal falls between two accounts in which Saul pursued David and David spared Saul’s life. Nabal was similar to Saul.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) you have shearers

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now I_heard that/for/because/then/when shearers to/for=you(fs) now the,shepherds which/who to/for=yourself(m) they_were with,us not did_~_harm,them and=not missed to/for=them anything all/each/any/every days_of were,they in/on/at/with,Carmel )

“your shearers are working” or “your shearers have sheep to shear.” David wants his men to speak so that Nabal understands that his sheep were well because David’s men helped guard them.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

(Occurrence 0) we did them no harm, and they missed nothing

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now I_heard that/for/because/then/when shearers to/for=you(fs) now the,shepherds which/who to/for=yourself(m) they_were with,us not did_~_harm,them and=not missed to/for=them anything all/each/any/every days_of were,they in/on/at/with,Carmel )

David is pointing out how he and his men offered protection to Nabal’s servants and flocks. This can be stated in positive form. Alternate translation: “we kept them and all their property from harm”
