OET (OET-LV)But Barnabas having_taken_hold_of him, brought him to the ambassadors, and described to_them how he_saw the master on the road, and that he_spoke to_him, and how he_spoke_boldly in Damaskos/(Dammeseq) in the name of_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).

OET (OET-RV)However Barnabas took Saul and brought him to the twelve, and Saul told them how he had seen the master on the road, and been spoken to by him, and how he had spoken boldly in Damascus in the name and authority of Yeshua.

Βαρναβᾶς & ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτὸν, ἤγαγεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους; καὶ διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶδεν τὸν Κύριον, καὶ ὅτι ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ & ἐπαρρησιάσατο

Barnabas & ˓having˒_taken_hold_of (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Βαρναβᾶς Δέ ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτόν ἤγαγεν πρός τούς ἀποστόλους καί διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶδεν τόν Κύριον καί ὅτι ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ καί πῶς ἐν Δαμασκῷ ἐπαρρησιάσατο ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ)

The pronoun him refers to Saul in every instance. The pronoun he refers to Saul in the first and third instances and to the Lord in the second instance. The pronoun them refers to the apostles. Alternate translation: [taking hold of Saul, Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told the apostles how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that the Lord had spoken to Saul … Saul had spoken boldly]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

on in in the name (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Βαρναβᾶς Δέ ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτόν ἤγαγεν πρός τούς ἀποστόλους καί διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶδεν τόν Κύριον καί ὅτι ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ καί πῶς ἐν Δαμασκῷ ἐπαρρησιάσατο ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ)

Here the name of Jesus represents his authority. Saul had spoken boldly with delegated authority, representing Jesus. Alternate translation: [as a representative of Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:26-28 When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, the Christian community understandably did not immediately trust him, given his recent history of violently persecuting Christians (8:3; 9:1, 13; 22:3, 4; 26:9-11). Fortunately, Barnabas, the “Son of Encouragement” (4:36), introduced the changed man to the apostles and explained his encounter with the Lord at Damascus, his sense of calling, and his subsequent boldness in preaching in the name of Jesus in Damascus. Barnabas was able to convince the apostles that Saul’s conversion was genuine, so Saul remained with the apostles in Jerusalem, where he preached boldly for his Lord. Paul recalls this visit in Gal 1:18-19.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
