Section 14:1–40 Believers should worship God in an orderly way

In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.

In this paragraph Paul wrote about the right use of the gift of prophecy in the worship services of the church.

The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.

People who prophesy can control their own spirits.
Those who declare God’s word should control themselves by taking turns.

The Greek text has a conjunction that the BSB does not translate. Some versions translate it as “and.” It introduces a teaching that further explains Paul’s instructions.

The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets: There are two ways to interpret the phrase that the BSB translates as The spirits of prophets:

It refers to the prophets’ own spirits. For example:
people who speak what God has revealed must control themselves (GW) (BSB, GW, NIV, ESV, NET, NASB, RSV, NLT, CEV, NCV, KJV)
It refers to the spiritual gift that the prophets possess. For example:
The gift of proclaiming God’s message should be under the speaker’s control (GNT) (GNT, NJB, REB)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is supported by many versions and commentaries.See, for example, Fee, p. 696; and Thiselton, p. 1144.

In this situation, the prophets would control themselves by waiting for the other person to speak. You can make this explicit by saying:

The prophets can control themselves by taking turns

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive here to focus on the spirits rather than focusing on the prophets If you must state who does the action, Paul implies that prophets do it. Here, the spirits of the prophets could refer to: (1) the “spiritual” gift that the prophets have by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is supported by [14:12](../14/12.md), where the word that is here translated spirits is there translated “spiritual gifts.” Alternate translation: [the spiritual gifts of prophets are subject to] or [what the Holy Spirit enables prophets to do is subject to] (2) the spirits that are part of the prophets, that is, their inner life or nonphysical parts. Alternate translation: [how the prophets act is subject to] or [the minds of prophets are subject to]

Here, prophets could refer to (1) the same prophets who have the spirits. In this case, prophets control their own spirits. Alternate translation: [these prophets] (2) other prophets. In this case, some prophets (those who are not speaking) control the spirits of different prophets (those who are speaking). Alternate translation: [the other prophets]
