OET (OET-LV)the secrets of_the heart of_him manifest is_becoming, and thus having_fallen on ^his_face, he_will_be_prostrating the before_god reporting, that Really the god among you_all is.

OET (OET-RV)The prophecies would expose the secrets of their hearts, so then they’d bow down and worship God, and exclaim, “God is really here among you all!”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–40 Believers should worship God in an orderly way

In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Good order in worship

The spiritual gifts of prophecy and tongues

Use spiritual gifts to help the church grow

Paragraph 14:20–25

In this paragraph Paul contrasted the purpose of tongues and the purpose of prophecy. The gift of tongues was a sign to unbelievers of God’s judgment upon them. But when the believers prophesied, unbelievers can repent.

14:25a

and the secrets of his heart will be made known.

and the secrets of his heart: The phrase the secrets of his heart refers to evil thoughts or actions that the person has not told to anybody else.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

his secret thoughts

the evil things that he has not told anybody else

will be made known: The phrase that the BSB translates as will be made known indicates that things this person kept hidden will become known. There are two ways to interpret who they will be known to:

  1. They will be know to the person himself. For example:

He will realize that God knows the evil things that he has done, things that other people do not know (T4T)

  2. They will be known to everybody. For example:

everybody will know the secrets of his heart

If you must make this clear, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This interpretation is followed by many commentaries.See, for example, Thiselton, p. 1129; Garland, p. 653; Hodge, p. 298. But contrast Ellingworth & Hatton, p. 318, who suggest the meaning “God’s message will cause others to know what he is secretly thinking.” Most English versions do not choose either interpretation.

This is a passive clause. There are two ways to translate it:

14:25b

So he will fall facedown and worship God,

So: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as So is literally “and thus.” It introduces what the unbeliever will do as a result of what he has heard the believers say.

he will fall facedown: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as he will fall facedown is more literally “falling on his face.” The unbeliever will kneel down and lower his face to the floor, to express his humility before God. Some languages have a verb such as “prostrate oneself” for lying with one’s face on the floor.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

he will kneel/prostrate down

and worship God: A person worships God when he shows God respect and adoration. See how you translated this word in Luke 4:7–8.

General Comment on 14:24a-25b

It is possible that more than one outsider will enter the Christian assembly. Paul used the plural form in verse 23. In some languages it may be natural to use the plural form in verses 24–25 also. For example:

But suppose all of you are prophesying when those unbelievers and outsiders come in. They will realize that they are sinners, and they will want to change their ways because of what you are saying. They will tell what is hidden in their hearts. Then they will kneel down and say… (CEV)

14:25c

proclaiming, “God is truly among you!”

proclaiming, “God is truly among you!”: This exclamation is addressed to the believers, not to God himself. It is not what the unbeliever will say to God as he worships. In some languages it may be natural to use an indirect quotation, as the RSV has done:

and declare that God is really among you (RSV)

General Comment on 14:24–25

In the Greek text, verses 14:24–25 form a long sentence. The BSB broke this up into two sentences. In some languages it may be natural to break it up into even shorter sentences. For example:

24But suppose everyone is prophesying and some people come in who do not believe or do not understand. If everyone is prophesying, their sin will be shown to them, and they will be judged by all that they hear. 25The secret things in their hearts will be made known. So they will bow down and worship God saying, “Truly, God is with you.” (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὰ κρυπτὰ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τά κρυπτά τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ φανερά γίνεται καί οὕτως πεσών ἐπί πρόσωπον προσκυνήσει τῷ Θεῷ ἀπαγγέλλων ὅτι Ὄντως ὁ Θεός ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστίν)

In Paul’s culture, the heart is the place where humans think and plan. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate heart as the place where humans think in your culture, or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [the secrets of his mind] or [his secret thoughts]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὰ κρυπτὰ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ φανερὰ γίνεται

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τά κρυπτά τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ φανερά γίνεται καί οὕτως πεσών ἐπί πρόσωπον προσκυνήσει τῷ Θεῷ ἀπαγγέλλων ὅτι Ὄντως ὁ Θεός ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστίν)

Here Paul speaks as if the secrets of his heart were invisible objects that could become visible. He speaks in this way to indicate that others now know the secrets as much as if they saw them become visible. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [the secrets of his heart become known] or [the secrets of his heart are revealed]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

πεσὼν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τά κρυπτά τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ φανερά γίνεται καί οὕτως πεσών ἐπί πρόσωπον προσκυνήσει τῷ Θεῷ ἀπαγγέλλων ὅτι Ὄντως ὁ Θεός ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστίν)

In Paul’s culture, “falling” on one’s face refers to kneeling down and putting one’s face close to the ground. This was a position used to show respect and sometimes worship. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express having fallen on his face with a comparable expression for a physical position used to show respect or worship, or you could express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [having bowed down] or [kneeling to show respect]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

αὐτοῦ & πρόσωπον, προσκυνήσει

˱of˲_him & ˓his˒_face ˱he˲_˓will_be˒_prostrating

Although his and he are masculine, Paul is using them to refer to anyone, whether man or woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express his and he with non gendered words or refer to both genders. Alternate translation: [his or her … his or her face, he or she will worship]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

ἀπαγγέλλων, ὅτι ὄντως ὁ Θεὸς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν

reporting ¬that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: τά κρυπτά τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ φανερά γίνεται καί οὕτως πεσών ἐπί πρόσωπον προσκυνήσει τῷ Θεῷ ἀπαγγέλλων ὅτι Ὄντως ὁ Θεός ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστίν)

If you do not use this form in your language, you could translate this statement as an indirect quote instead of as a direct quote. Alternate translation: [declaring that God is really among you]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
