SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–40 Believers should worship God in an orderly way

In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Good order in worship

The spiritual gifts of prophecy and tongues

Use spiritual gifts to help the church grow

Paragraph 14:36–40

In this paragraph Paul talked about spiritual authority.

14:39a

So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy,

So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So introduces a concluding command about how the Corinthians should act. Here is another way to translate this:

So then (GNT)

my brothers: Here as elsewhere Paul referred to Christian believers, not to his relatives. He spoke to both men and women.

Here is another way to translate this phrase:

my friends (GNT)

be eager to prophesy: The phrase be eager to prophesy indicates that Paul wanted the believers to be enthusiastic about declaring the word of God. It was a good thing, and he encouraged them to do it.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

strongly desire to prophesy

you should want to have the spiritual gift of prophecy

14:39b

and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

and: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as and introduces another command. This command contrasts with the command in 14:39a. In some languages it may be more natural to translate the conjunction as “but.” Introduce this second negative command in a way that is natural in your language.

do not forbid speaking in tongues: Although Paul wrote favorably about prophecy in this chapter, he never said the Corinthians should not use the gift of tongues. Here he told them to permit people to speak in tongues.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

do not stop people from using the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ὥστε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὥστε ἀδελφοί ζηλοῦτε τό προφητεύειν καί τό λαλεῖν μή κωλύετε ἐν γλώσσαις)

Here, So then introduces a conclusion of the argument from [14:1–38](../14/01.md). Use a word or phrase in your language that introduces the conclusion to an argument. Alternate translation: [Therefore] or [To sum up]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀδελφοί

brothers

Although brothers is masculine, Paul is using the term to refer to any believer, whether man or woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express brothers with a non gendered word or refer to both genders. Alternate translation: [brothers and sisters]

τὸ λαλεῖν & γλώσσαις

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὥστε ἀδελφοί ζηλοῦτε τό προφητεύειν καί τό λαλεῖν μή κωλύετε ἐν γλώσσαις)

Alternate translation: [speaking in tongues]
