Section 14:1–40 Believers should worship God in an orderly way

In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.

Paragraph 14:20–25

In this paragraph Paul contrasted the purpose of tongues and the purpose of prophecy. The gift of tongues was a sign to unbelievers of God’s judgment upon them. But when the believers prophesied, unbelievers can repent.

14:24a

But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in

But: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as But continues the contrast between tongues and prophecy.

if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in: These are the same Greek words that were used in 14:23b, but here they are in the singular. Here, also, the two words are reversed. You may reverse them or use the same order as in 14:23b, whichever is most natural in your language.

14:24b

while everyone is prophesying,

while everyone is prophesying: Here, everyone is a hyperbole and may mean “many people” or “everyone with the gift of prophecy.” Paul did not mean that they were all speaking at the same time, but that several people prophesied, one after the other.

If you used second-person pronouns in 14:23, it may be natural to continue using them here:

while all of you are prophesying

General Comment on 14:24a-b

The BSB has reversed the order of the Greek words in 14:24a-b. The RSV and many other English versions follow the Greek order. Here is another way to translate this:

But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters (RSV)

You should follow the order that is most natural for your language.

14:24c

he will be convicted and called to account by all,

he will be convicted and called to account by all: The verbs will be convicted and called to account are passive. There are two ways to translate these phrases:

he will be convicted: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as he will be convicted means that the visitor will become aware that he has done things that are wrong. He will become conscious of his sin.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

they are convicted of sin (NIV11)

he will know that he is a sinner

he will know that he has done wrong

called to account: The verb called to account means almost the same thing as “convicted.” It means that this person will be made to realize that he has sinned.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

he will know that he is guilty

he will know that God will judge him

by all: There is implied information in the phrase by all. In some languages it may be clearer to translate it in one of these ways:

by all these words

by all of you

by all those who prophesy

Here Paul is using a hypothetical situation to teach the Corinthians. He wants them to imagine that all would prophesy, and he implies that the whole church is together for this hypothetical situation, just like for the last one (See: [14:23](../14/23.md)). Then, he wants them to imagine what would happen if some unbeliever or ungifted person is present and hears all prophesying. Use a natural way in your language to introduce a hypothetical situation. Alternate translation: [suppose that they all would prophesy. Suppose that some unbeliever or ungifted person comes in. In that situation, he is convicted]

Here Paul uses the third person because he is again using a hypothetical situation. However, he wants the Corinthians to apply this hypothetical situation to themselves. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express that they applies to the Corinthians with the second person instead. Alternate translation: [you all would prophesy]

Here, just as in [14:23](../14/23.md), ungifted could refer to: (1) any person who does not understand the tongues that the other people are speaking. Alternate translation: [person who does not understand tongues] or [uninitiated person] (2) a person who is not part of the Christian group. Alternate translation: [outsider]

If your language does not use repetition for emphasis, and if your readers might be confused as to why Paul repeats himself, you can combine these two clauses into one. Alternate translation: [he is confronted by all] or [he is convicted and examined by all]
