Section 14:1–40 Believers should worship God in an orderly way

In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.

without meaning: The Greek word that the BSB translates as without meaning is literally “voiceless.” There are two ways to interpret this word:

  1. It means “without meaning” or “not communicating.” For example:

    without meaning (RSV) (BSB, RSV, NIV, ESV, NLT, CEV, GNT, NET, NASB, NCV, KJV)

  2. It means “fail to make sounds.” For example:

    all of them use sound (NJB) (NJB, NRSV)

Here, doubtless indicates that Paul is assuming that there are so many kinds of languages. He is not arguing this and is not interested in proving it. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express doubtless with a comparable word or phrase that refers to something that is assumed to be true. Alternate translation: [assuredly] or [certainly]

οὐδὲν ἄφωνον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Τοσαῦτα εἰ τύχοι γένη φωνῶν εἰσίν ἐν κόσμῳ καί οὐδέν ἄφωνον)

Here, without meaning could refer to: (1) how all the languages “communicate” clearly among those who know those languages. Alternate translation: [and none communicate nothing] (2) how all the languages use “sound” or “voice” to communicate. Alternate translation: [none is without sound] or [all of them use the voice]

Here Paul uses a figure of speech that expresses a strong positive meaning by using a negative word together with a word that means the opposite of the intended meaning. If this is confusing in your language, you can express the meaning positively. Alternate translation: [all have meaning]

14:1-25 Having emphasized the supreme importance of love (ch 13), Paul returns to the subject of spiritual gifts. Their relative value is defined by the benefit they give to others, which is characteristic of love (ch 13). In that light, Paul contrasts the over-valued gift of tongues with the more beneficial gift of prophecy.
