SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–40 Believers should worship God in an orderly way

In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Good order in worship

The spiritual gifts of prophecy and tongues

Use spiritual gifts to help the church grow

Paragraph 14:29–33a

In this paragraph Paul wrote about the right use of the gift of prophecy in the worship services of the church.

14:31a

For you can all prophesy in turn

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces the reason for the command Paul gave in 14:30. Some English versions do not translate this conjunction explicitly.

you can all prophesy in turn: Paul wanted all the prophets to whom God revealed a message to be able to speak. He told them that they should speak one at a time, not together. The word all means “up to three people” and does not mean literally “everyone.”

14:31b

so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.

so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged: This gives the purpose for the prophets speaking one by one. The purpose was that all the believers could learn and be helped by God’s word.

The verbs be instructed and be…encouraged are in the passive. There are two ways to translate these verbs:

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: δύνασθε Γάρ καθʼ ἕνα πάντες προφητεύειν ἵνα πάντες μανθάνωσιν καί πάντες παρακαλῶνται)

Here, For introduces the reason why Paul wants “the first” speaker to “be silent” when another receives a revelation (See: [14:30](../14/30.md)): if they do what he asks, all are able to prophesy. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express For with a word that introduces a reason for a command. Alternate translation: [Do that because, in this way,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πάντες

all

Here Paul does not state who all are. He implies that all refers to everyone who receives a revelation from God (See: [14:30](../14/30.md)). He does not have in mind every single believer who gathers together. If your readers would not infer this information, you could state it explicitly. Alternate translation: [all who receive a revelation]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

καθ’ ἕνα

˱one˲_by one

Here, one by one means that people do something one after the other or in order. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express one by one with a word or phrase that refers to doing things successively or in order. Alternate translation: [in order] or [in turn]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πάντες παρακαλῶνται

all all all ˓may_be_being˒_exhorted

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form to emphasize the person who is encouraged instead of the person doing the encouraging. If you must state who does the action, Paul implies that the ones who prophesy do it. Alternate translation: [the prophets may encourage all] or [the prophecies may encourage all]
