כִּֽי־יִמָּכֵ֨ר לְךָ֜ אָחִ֣יךָ הָֽעִבְרִ֗י א֚וֹ הָֽעִבְרִיָּ֔ה וַעֲבָֽדְךָ֖ שֵׁ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֑ים וּבַשָּׁנָה֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔ת תְּשַׁלְּחֶ֥נּוּ
that/for/because/then/when sold to/for=yourself(m) your(ms)=brother/kindred the,Hebrew or the,Hebrew and,serves,you six years and,in/on/at/with,year the,seventh set,him
Moses is describing a hypothetical situation in order to tell the Israelites what they should do if it takes place. Use a natural form in your language for introducing a situation that could happen. Alternate translation: [Suppose your brother, a Hebrew man or Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you must send him out]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
יִמָּכֵ֨ר לְךָ֜ אָחִ֣יךָ הָֽעִבְרִ֗י א֚וֹ הָֽעִבְרִיָּ֔ה
sold to/for=yourself(m) your(ms)=brother/kindred the,Hebrew or the,Hebrew
The expression is sold is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, becomes your slave]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
אָחִ֣יךָ
your(ms)=brother/kindred
Moses is speaking as if the one being sold were an actual brother of the Israelites he is addressing. He is using the term to mean a descendant of the same ancestor. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly.. Alternate translation: [your fellow countryman]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
יִמָּכֵ֨ר לְךָ֜
sold to/for=yourself(m)
When someone could not pay their debts, he or she would sell himself or herself to work for their creditor to pay back their debt. See the Chapter Introduction for more information on Israelite slaves. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [is sold to you to pay his debt]
Note 5 topic: translate-ordinal
וּבַשָּׁנָה֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔ת
and,in/on/at/with,year the,seventh
If your language would not represent a number in a form such as the seventh year, you could represent this number in a form that your language would use. Alternate translation: [then in year seven]
15:12 If a fellow Hebrew sells himself or herself to be your servant: This arrangement allowed a debtor to work off financial obligations to a creditor. The limit of this arrangement was seven years (but see 15:16-17).
OET (OET-LV) if/because he_will_sell_himself to/for_yourself(m) your(ms)_brother/kindred the_Hebrew or the_Hebrew and_serves_you six years and_in/on/at/with_year the_seventh set_him a_free_person from_with_you.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
