Here the author refers to the story of the first Passover, a festival that the Israelites continued to celebrate to remember what happened when God delivered them from Egypt. God had warned the king of Egypt that if he did not let the Israelites go free, he would kill the firstborn son in each Egyptian family. God told Moses to have the Israelites spread blood from a sacrificed lamb on their doors so that their firstborn sons would not die. Then, God sent a destroying angel, who killed the firstborn sons of the Egyptians. When that happened, the king of Egypt let the Israelites go free.
