OET (OET-LV)And_they they_took DOM [that]_which he_had_made Mīkāh and_DOM the_priest/officer who he_belonged to_him/it and_they_came to Layish to a_people at_peace and_unsuspecting and_struck DOM_them with_edge of_[the]_sword and_DOM the_city they_burned in/on/at/with_fire.

OET (OET-RV)taking with them the things that Micah had made, as well as his priest. They came to Layish where the unsuspecting people were living peaceably, and they slaughtered them with their swords and burnt down the city.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) what Micah had made

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they took DOM which/who he/it_had_made Mīkāh and=DOM the=priest/officer which/who it_became to=him/it and=they_came on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Layish on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in people quiet and,unsuspecting and,struck DOM,them with,edge sword and=DOM the=city burned in/on/at/with,fire )

Micah did not make his gods, rather a craftsman made them for him. Also, If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the things that had been made for Micah” or “Micah’s things” (See also: figs-activepassive)

(Occurrence 0) Laish

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they took DOM which/who he/it_had_made Mīkāh and=DOM the=priest/officer which/who it_became to=him/it and=they_came on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Layish on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in people quiet and,unsuspecting and,struck DOM,them with,edge sword and=DOM the=city burned in/on/at/with,fire )

See how you translated this in Judges 18:7.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) with the edge of the sword

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they took DOM which/who he/it_had_made Mīkāh and=DOM the=priest/officer which/who it_became to=him/it and=they_came on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Layish on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in people quiet and,unsuspecting and,struck DOM,them with,edge sword and=DOM the=city burned in/on/at/with,fire )

“with their swords.” Here “the sword” represents the swords and other weapons that the soldiers used in battle.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:1-31 The migration of the Danites (cp. Josh 19:40-48) is the story of that tribe’s failure to obey God’s covenant, and it is indicative of Israel’s decline. What began as Micah’s private heresy (Judg 17:4-5) would become the apostasy of an entire tribe (18:30-31). What began as covenant failure (1:19-36) turned into social breakdown in the days of Jephthah and Samson (chs 11–16). In the end, law and order were replaced by banditry and pillaging (18:27-28).
