19:23 Note: We agree with both BHS 1997 and BHQ on an unexpected reading.

OET (OET-RV)The man who owned the house went out to them and said to them, “No, my brothers, please you mustn’t act wickedly. That man is a guest in my house—you all mustn’t do this disgraceful thing.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

my brothers

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to,them the=man owner the,house and=he/it_said to,them not brothers,my not act_~_wickedly now after which/who he/it_came the=man the=this not house,my not do DOM the,disgraceful_thing the,this )

The old man is speaking to these men as if they were his brothers. He is appealing to them as fellow members of the community. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “my fellow townsmen”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Since this man has come into my house

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to,them the=man owner the,house and=he/it_said to,them not brothers,my not act_~_wickedly now after which/who he/it_came the=man the=this not house,my not do DOM the,disgraceful_thing the,this )

The old man assumes that the men of Gibeah will understand from this phrase that the old man considers the Levite, as a guest in his home, to be under his protection. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “Since this man is a guest under my protection”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:23 For this man is a guest in my house: It was shameful to be inhospitable to a visitor, but the evil demands of the crowd went beyond lack of hospitality. They intended violence against the visitor (see 20:5).
