The expression sons of describes people who share a certain quality. In this case, the author is using the expression to describe people who have the quality of living in the East. The author is referring to an area to the East of where he and his audience live. It seems probable that he may mean the area east of the Jordan River, as the UST suggests. However, since it is not known exactly where the author and his audience lived, you could also use a general expression rather than try to identify the area in your translation. Alternate translation: “the people who lived in that area”
