OET (OET-LV) And_he_placed DOM corpse_of_his in_his_own_of_grave and_people_mourned on/upon/above_him/it alas my_brother/kindred.
OET (OET-RV) They wailed over him, saying, “Oh dear, my brother,” and they laid his body in the old prophet’s grave.
Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
וַיַּנַּ֥ח אֶת־נִבְלָת֖וֹ בְּקִבְר֑וֹ
(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_placed DOM corpse_of,his in,his_own_of,grave and,people_mourned on/upon/above=him/it alas my=brother/kindred )
The pronoun he refers to the old prophet, while the pronoun his refers to the man of God from Judah. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [And the old prophet laid the corpse of the man of God in his own grave]
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns
וַיִּסְפְּד֥וּ עָלָ֖יו
(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_placed DOM corpse_of,his in,his_own_of,grave and,people_mourned on/upon/above=him/it alas my=brother/kindred )
The author is using the pronoun they in a general sense, not to refer to specific people. Use an expression for this that would be natural in your language. Alternate translation: [And people mourned over him] or [And he was mourned as people said]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / apostrophe
ה֥וֹי אָחִֽי
alas my=brother/kindred
The people are speaking to the dead prophet even though they know that he cannot hear them. They are doing this to communicate to the people who can hear them that they feel very strongly about the man’s death. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words as if they were speaking directly to the people who could hear them about how they feel. Alternate translation: [We are very sad that this brother of ours has died]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ה֥וֹי אָחִֽי
alas my=brother/kindred
The people are speaking as if the dead prophet were actually their brother. They are using that term to describe a fellow Israelite. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Alas, my kinsman] or [We are very sad that this kinsman of ours has died]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
