Section 12:49–53: Jesus’ message will cause divisions among people

In this section Jesus was still talking to his disciples. He told them that a difficult time was coming. He warned them that in many families, some family members would follow him and some would not. This would cause family members to disagree and separate.

12:52a

From now on, five in one household will be divided,

From now on: The phrase From now on means “starting now and continuing into the future.”

five in one household: Jesus used the phrase five in one household to give an example of people in a Jewish household. In 12:53 Jesus talked about five related people: father, mother, son, daughter, and daughter-in-law (son’s wife).

will be divided: In this context the phrase will be divided indicates that the household was not unified. Some members of the household disagreed with other members about whether Jesus was the Messiah. The family members argued and were on opposite sides.

Some ways to translate this verse part are:

From now on, a family with five people will be divided (NCV)

Starting from now, the members of a family will oppose one another

Notice that in the last example, the number “five” has been left implicit, because it is clear from 12:52b.

12:52b

three against two and two against three.

three against two and two against three: The word three refers here to three family members, and the word two refers to the other two family members.

In some languages it may not be natural to repeat the numbers in opposite order. If that is true in your language, you may simply mention the numbers once. For example:

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would ordinarily need in order to be complete. you could supply these words from what he says earlier in the sentence. Alternate translation: [three of the family members will be on one side, and the other two will be on the opposing side]

These two phrases mean the same thing. Jesus is likely using repetition for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could combine these phrases. Alternate translation: [three of the family members will be on one side, and the other two will be on the opposing side]
