OET (OET-LV)Thus I_am_saying to_you_all, there_is_becoming joy before the messengers of_ the _god over one sinner repenting.

OET (OET-RV)I’m telling you all that there’s similar celebration by God’s messengers in heaven over one person who turns from their disobedience and obeys God.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:8–10: Jesus told a parable about a woman looking for her lost coin

The parable about the lost coin in 15:8–10 is similar to the parable in the last section about the lost sheep. It has a similar theme, and it contains some similar words and phrases. You should translate these words and phrases in similar ways, if possible. In this parable a woman searched diligently for a lost coin until she found it. She then invited her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her that she had found the coin.

Some other headings for this section are:

The Lost Coin (GNT)

A woman was happy to find a lost coin

15:10a

In the same way, I tell you,

In the same way: The Greek word that the BSB translates as In the same way again introduces the important truth that the parable illustrates. When the woman found her lost coin, she invited her friends to rejoice with her. In the same way, God rejoices, and his angels rejoice with him. See the note on 15:7a.

I tell you: Jesus often used the words I tell you in a statement that he wanted to emphasize. He was asking people to listen with extra attention. Some ways to show this emphasis could be:

If you have another way in your language to emphasize a statement or to alert people to listen with special attention, consider using it here. See how you translated this expression in 10:12.

15:10b

there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.”

there is joy in the presence of God’s angels: In this context the clause there is joy in the presence of God’s angels has a similar meaning to the clause “there will be more joy in heaven” in 15:7b. It indicates indirectly that God rejoices. It also implies that his angels rejoice with him. There are three ways to interpret this clause: (1) It indicates indirectly that God rejoices in the presence of his angels. (2) It indicates that both God and the angels rejoice. (3) It indicates simply that the angels rejoice. Most scholars think that the focus is on God’s rejoicing, but that his angels also rejoice with him. The text does not imply any difference in the attitude of God and the angels. Some ways to translate it are:

God rejoices in the presence of his angels

God rejoices and his angels rejoice with him

See angel, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

joy: The Greek word that the BSB translates as joy is the same word as in 15:7b.

over one sinner who repents: This phrase also occurs in 15:7b.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὕτως

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὕτως λέγω ὑμῖν γίνεται χαρά ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπί ἑνί ἁμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι)

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express the implicit meaning here. Alternate translation: [Just as the woman and her friends and neighbors would rejoice]

λέγω ὑμῖν

˱I˲_˓am˒_saying ˱to˲_you_all

Jesus says this to emphasize what he is about to tell these Pharisees and scribes. Alternate translation: [indeed]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ

before the angels ¬the ˱of˲_God

The term before means “in the presence” of someone. Alternate translation: [in the presence of God’s angels] or [among the angels of God]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:1-32 Chapter 15 contains three related parables of things lost and found: a sheep (15:1-7), a coin (15:8-10), and a son (15:11-32). The loss of something loved causes deep sorrow, whereas finding it brings great joy. There is great rejoicing in heaven when lost sinners return to their heavenly Father.
