OET (OET-LV)And the son said to_him:
father, I_sinned against the heaven and before you, I_am no_longer worthy to_be_called a_son of_you.

OET (OET-RV)and the son said, ‘Father, I’ve disobeyed God and dishonoured you and I’m no longer worthy to be called your son.’

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:11–32: Jesus told about a father welcoming his sinful son home

In this parable Jesus told about a young man who left his father’s home and wasted the money that his father had given him. Then Jesus told how the young man returned to his father, and how his father welcomed him home. The young man had an older brother who was not happy at all when his father welcomed his younger brother. This story illustrates what God is like. He is ready to forgive anyone who truly turns from his sins and begins to obey him. It also warns people not to be like the older son, who did not want to forgive his brother.

Some other headings for this section are:

The Lost Son (GNT)

The Son Who Left Home (NCV)

A son who wasted his share of the inheritance

A father was happy when his son returned home

Before you decide on a heading for this section, think about a natural way in your language to describe a child who deliberately left home and foolishly wasted his money. In some languages a word such as “lost” can only be used to describe someone who doesn’t know where he is. If that is true in your language, you will want to use a more appropriate expression for this context.

Paragraph 15:20b–24

In 15:20b–c the focus changes from the young man to the father and what the father felt and did when the son came home.

15:21a

The son declared,

15:21b

‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

15:21c

I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

15:21

In this verse the younger son began to tell his father what he had decided to tell him in 15:18–19. Here he repeated only the words from 15:18c and 15:19a. See how you translated the son’s words there. However, the son did not complete his speech. His father apparently interrupted him before he could finish.

At the end of this verse some Greek manuscripts add, “Make me like one of your hired servants,” which occurred in 15:19. No English version on Translator’s Workplace includes those words here in 15:21. It is recommended that you also not include them. Many scholars believe that copyists may have added this accidentally or deliberately to be consistent with 15:19, where these words appear. For more information, see Greek NT UBS 4th ed., p. 265; Metzger, p. 164; TRT, p. 309; Blight 2007, p. 152; and Marshall, p. 610. However, you may want to add a footnote, as many English versions do. For example:

Other ancient authorities add Treat me like one of your hired servants (NRSV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

εἶπεν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτῷ, Πάτερ, ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου; οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου

said (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ ὁ υἱός αὐτῷ Πάτερ ἥμαρτον εἰς τόν οὐρανόν καί ἐνώπιον σοῦ οὐκέτι εἰμί ἄξιος κληθῆναι Υἱός σοῦ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that it is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [Then the son told his father that he had sinned against God and directly against him, and that he did not deserve to be called his son anymore]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

τὸν οὐρανὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ ὁ υἱός αὐτῷ Πάτερ ἥμαρτον εἰς τόν οὐρανόν καί ἐνώπιον σοῦ οὐκέτι εἰμί ἄξιος κληθῆναι Υἱός σοῦ)

In order to honor the commandment not to misuse God’s name, Jewish people often avoided saying the word “God” and used the word heaven instead. Alternate translation: [God]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνώπιόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ ὁ υἱός αὐτῷ Πάτερ ἥμαρτον εἰς τόν οὐρανόν καί ἐνώπιον σοῦ οὐκέτι εἰμί ἄξιος κληθῆναι Υἱός σοῦ)

The term before means “in the presence” of another person. The young man is making a distinction between the way he has sinned against heaven, by committing many sins, and before his father, by causing him personal shame and loss. Alternate translation: [directly against]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου

no_longer (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ ὁ υἱός αὐτῷ Πάτερ ἥμαρτον εἰς τόν οὐρανόν καί ἐνώπιον σοῦ οὐκέτι εἰμί ἄξιος κληθῆναι Υἱός σοῦ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who would do the action. Alternate translation: [I am no longer worthy for you to call me your son]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

κληθῆναι

˓to_be˒_called

This expression could also be an idiom that means “to be.” See how you translated this phrase in [1:32](../01/32.md), [1:76](../01/76.md), and [2:23](../02/23.md). Alternate translation: [to be]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:21 The son gave his rehearsed speech. Some manuscripts add Please take me on as a hired servant. The lack of this sentence in the better manuscripts suggests that his father didn’t give him a chance to finish.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
