SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:4–8: Jesus told a parable about seeds falling on different types of soil

In this section Jesus told a parable about different types of soil and what happens when seed falls on them. The parable illustrated how different people receive the word of God. In the parable, a man scattered seeds that fell on different types of soil (8:5–8). After Jesus told this parable, he explained why he used parables (8:9–10). He explained the meaning of the parable in 8:11–15. The same parable and discussion are in Matthew 13:3–23 and Mark 4:3–20.

The events in this section probably happened during the period of time that was described in 8:1–3. At that time Jesus was traveling from town to town to preach to people about the kingdom of God.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

A Story About a Farmer (GW)

Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed (NLT)

Some fell on rocky ground,

Some fell on rocky ground: Some of the seeds fell on ground that had a layer of rock underneath it. This layer of rock was probably not loose rocks mixed with dirt, but solid rock with shallow soil on top. Some ways to translate this are:

Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. (NLT96)

Some seeds fell on ground that had only a thin layer of soil over rock.

Some: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Some is literally “others.” It refers to another group of seeds.

and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture.

when it came up, the seedlings withered: The Greek word that the BSB translates as when it came up means “it grew.” It indicates that the seeds sprouted and started growing into young plants. The word withered indicates that the young plants “dried up” or “died.” Other ways to translate these actions are:

seeds…started growing. But the plants…soon dried up (CEV)

When the plants came up, they withered (GW)

and when the plants sprouted, they dried up (GNT)

Be sure to speak of seeds becoming plants and beginning to grow in a natural way in your language.

because they had no moisture: The reason why the plants dried up was that they did not have enough water. The plants did not have enough water because the soilThe thin soil had the double consequence that (a) it would not hold much water and would dry quickly in the sun and (b) it would not be possible for the plants to put down deep roots in this soil type, thus hindering the ability of the plants to receive adequate water. This second consequence is described in Matthew and Mark. However, because the roots are not mentioned in Luke and because the focus is ultimately on the soil, if it is necessary to be more explicit about how the seedlings in the soil type die, we recommend a model that follows the first consequence. was shallow. It was not because there was not enough rain. In some languages it may be helpful to make this clear. For example:

the/this soil could not provide/hold enough water

Continue to use either the singular or the plural, whichever would be more natural in your language. Alternate translation: [each plant dried out and shriveled up] or [the plants dried out and shriveled up]
