Moses is using the question form for emphasis and to express his frustration at being expected to care for the Israelites like a mother. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate these questions as statements or as exclamations. Alternate translation: [I, I did not conceive all this people. I, I did not bear him, that you say to me, ‘Carry him in your bosom just as the one nursing carries the one sucking,’ upon the ground that you swore to his fathers.]

Here, Moses is speaking as if he were actually a mother who had conceived and given birth to all the Israelites. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Am I like a mother who conceived all these people? Am I like the mother that bore them]

Moses is stating the pronoun I separately, even though the verbs translated as I conceive and I bear already include this meaning. He is doing that to emphasize that it is definitely not he who did those things. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing that emphasis. Alternate translation: [Was it I who conceived … was it I who bore him]

Here, the quotation could end after: (1) the word sucking. Moses speaks the rest of the sentence to Yahweh. See the ULT. (2) the word father. This implies either that Moses swore the promise or that Yahweh is speaking about himself in the second person. Alternate translation: [‘Carry him in your bosom just as the one nursing carries the one sucking upon the ground that you swore to his fathers?’]

Here, Moses is speaking as if the Israelites were actually a child whom he had to carry in his bosom and nurse. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Take care of them as if you were carrying them in your bosom … to their fathers]

The point of this comparison is that just as the one nursing carries the one sucking is gentle and caring, so Moses should care for the Israelites. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [with the tenderness of a nurse carrying the one sucking]

Moses is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply the words “to give to” from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [that you swore to give to his fathers]

Moses is using the term fathers to mean “ancestors.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to his predecessors]

Moses is using over the ground as a common expression of his culture to mean “to the land.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly.
