OET (OET-LV) And_ YHWH _he/it_descended in_cloud and_he/it_spoke to_him/it and_he_set_apart some_of the_spirit which on/upon/above_him/it and_he/it_gave on seventy man the_elders and_he/it_was just_as_rested on_them the_spirit and_they_prophesied and_not they_repeated.
OET (OET-RV) Then Yahweh came down in the cloud and spoke to Mosheh, and he took some of the spirit away from him and put it on those seventy elders. As the spirit rested on them, they prophesied (but they never did that again).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וַיֵּ֨רֶד יְהוָ֥ה
and=he/it_descended YHWH
Here the author is speaking of Yahweh as if he were a person who could move up and down in space. This was a common way of describing God appearing to humans to interact with them. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. See how you translated the similar phrase in [11:17](../11/17.md). Alternate translation: [And Yahweh met them]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
בֶּעָנָן֮
in,cloud
The implication is that this was the same cloud that represented Yahweh’s presence, which descended on and remained above the sacred tent as described in [9:15–23](../09/15.md). You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [in the cloud that was over the Dwelling]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וַיָּ֗אצֶל מִן־הָר֨וּחַ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָלָ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֕ן עַל־שִׁבְעִ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ
and,he_set_apart from/more_than the,spirit which/who on/upon/above=him/it and=he/it_gave on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in seventy (a)_man
Here, the author is speaking as if the Spirit that empowered Moses were a physical substance that could be removed from one person and distributed to others. This represents God sharing his power and authority. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. See how you translated the similar construction in [11:17](../11/17.md). Alternate translation: [and he shared some of the authority and power that he gave Moses through his Spirit with 70 men]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
מִן־הָר֨וּחַ֙ & הָר֔וּחַ
from/more_than the,spirit & the,spirit
On this issue, see the chapter introduction for more information, and see how you referred to Spirit in [11:17](../11/17.md). Here, the word Spirit could refer to: (1) God’s Spirit. Alternate translation: [from God’s Spirit … God’s Spirit] (2) Moses’ own spirit that Yahweh has specially equipped. Alternate translation: [from the spirit … the spirit]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
וַיִּתֵּ֕ן עַל־שִׁבְעִ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ
and=he/it_gave on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in seventy (a)_man
The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. See how you translated the similar clause in [11:17](../11/17.md). Alternate translation: [and he gave some of that Spirit on 70 men]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
כְּנ֤וֹחַ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ הָר֔וּחַ
just,as_rested on,them the,spirit
Here, the author is speaking of the Spirit as if it were a physical being that could rest on people. This represents God giving these men authority and power to serve as leaders. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [as they received the authority and power through God’s Spirit]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וְלֹ֥א יָסָֽפוּ
and=not do_~_again
The phrase they did not add is a common expression of this culture that means “they did not do it again” or “it happened only that one time.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [but they did so only that time]
OET (OET-LV) And_ YHWH _he/it_descended in_cloud and_he/it_spoke to_him/it and_he_set_apart some_of the_spirit which on/upon/above_him/it and_he/it_gave on seventy man the_elders and_he/it_was just_as_rested on_them the_spirit and_they_prophesied and_not they_repeated.
OET (OET-RV) Then Yahweh came down in the cloud and spoke to Mosheh, and he took some of the spirit away from him and put it on those seventy elders. As the spirit rested on them, they prophesied (but they never did that again).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
