David is speaking of the bow of Jonathan as if it had been a person who could have been sent to fulfill a task but who might have decided to turn itself back and not complete it. David is speaking similarly of the sword of Saul as if it had been a person who could have been sent to get something but who might have returned with empty hands, that is, without it. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [When Jonathan shot arrows at enemy soldiers, the arrows pierced them so that they bled and died. When Saul stabbed enemy soldiers, his sword cut them so deeply that their fat came out and they died]

David is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. He is using a common image of his culture, but in an abbreviated form. The image appears in its full form in [Deuteronomy 32:42](../../deu/32/42.md), “I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will devour flesh.” You can supply the omitted words from the cultural context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [From drinking the blood of the slain, from devouring the fat of the mighty]

מִדַּ֣ם חֲלָלִ֗ים מֵחֵ֨לֶב֙ גִּבּוֹרִ֔ים
(Some words not found in UHB: from_[the],blood_of slain from_[the],fat_of mighty bow_of Yōnātān/(Yəhōnātān/(Jonathan)) not turn back and,the_sword_of Shāʼūl/(Saul) not return empty )
David is speaking as if the bow and sword were living things that could drink blood and consume fat. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [From slaying soldiers by piercing them so that they bled, from stabbing the mighty so deeply that their fat came out]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj
חֲלָלִ֗ים & גִּבּוֹרִ֔ים
slain & (Some words not found in UHB: from_[the],blood_of slain from_[the],fat_of mighty bow_of Yōnātān/(Yəhōnātān/(Jonathan)) not turn back and,the_sword_of Shāʼūl/(Saul) not return empty )
David is using the adjectives slain and mighty as nouns to mean certain kinds of people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you can translate these adjectives with equivalent phrases. Alternate translation: [slain soldiers … mighty warriors]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
קֶ֚שֶׁת יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן לֹ֥א נָשׂ֖וֹג אָח֑וֹר

David is using the term bow by association to mean the arrows that Jonathan shot from his bow. You may choose to use the arrows to represent this image in your translation. Alternate translation: [the arrows of Jonathan did not turn themselves back]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
