Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.
Daniel received some more information about the fourth beast in the vision
As I watched,
While I was watching,
Then in my dream/vision I had seen
As I watched: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as As I watched indicates that Daniel continued to see images in a dream or vision. It introduces the next scene in Daniel’s dream. Other ways to translate this include:
as I looked (NRSV)
as my dream continued, I saw…
then in my dream…
this horn was waging war against the saints and prevailing against them,
this horn fought God’s holy people and began to defeat them.
this final horn attacking and overcoming God’s own people.
this horn was waging war against the saints and prevailing against them: In Daniel’s dream, the final horn, the little horn that looked the most imposing, was fighting and overcoming God’s people. Here is another way to translate this:
the little horn began making war against God’s holy people and was defeating them (NCV)
In some languages it may be natural to combine the ideas of waging war against and prevailing against an enemy into a clause with one verb. For example:
the little horn was conquering the holy people
against the saints: Some English translations, such as the NRSV, say “with the holy people.” The English preposition “with” here means against. The little horn attacked God’s holy people.
the saints: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as the saints is literally “the holy ones.” In this context it refers to the people who belonged to God and were consecrated to him or set apart for him. See 7:18a and how you translated this there. Here is another way to translate this:
God’s holy people (NLT)
וְקַרְנָ֣א דִכֵּ֔ן
and,the,horn this
This refers to the fourth horn that is described in [Daniel 7:20](../07/20.md).
