Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְעָמְד֧וּ שְׁנֵֽי־הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־לָהֶ֥ם הָרִ֖יב

and,stand two_of the,men which/who to/for=them the,dispute

Here, stand means “present the case.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: [then the two men who have the controversy shall bring their case]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

שְׁנֵֽי־הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־לָהֶ֥ם הָרִ֖יב

two_of the,men which/who to/for=them the,dispute

The implication is that the two men disagree about whether the accused man sinned or not. Thus, the controversy is about what really happened. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [the accuser and the accused who disagree about what happened]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לִפְנֵ֣י & לִפְנֵ֤י

to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before & to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before

Here, face represents the presence of Yahweh and faces represents the presence of the priests and judges. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [before … before]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְהַשֹּׁ֣פְטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִהְי֖וּ

and,the,judges which/who are

The implication is that there will be judges at the place of worship who will make decisions for all of Israel. The judges served for a limited period of time, then other judges replaced them. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and the judges who will be in office]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

יִהְי֖וּ בַּיָּמִ֥ים הָהֵֽם

are in_the=days the=those

Moses is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply the implied words if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [will be serving at the place of worship in those days]
