BrTrAnd thou, son of man, fear them not, nor be dismayed at their face; (for they will madden and will rise up against thee round about, and thou dwellest in the midst of scorpions): be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their countenance, for it is a provoking house.

ULTYou, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, although you are with briers and thorns and although you live with scorpions. Do not fear their words or be dismayed by their faces, since they are a rebellious house.

USTAnd you, son of man, you must not be afraid of them or afraid of what they say. Living among them will be like living in the midst of briers or scorpions, but do not be afraid of them. They are rebellious people, but do not allow them to frighten you.

BSB  § But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns surround you, and you dwell among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their presence, though they are a rebellious house.

FBVSon of man, don't be afraid of them or what they say. You don't need to be afraid even though you're surrounded by brambles and thorns, even though you live among scorpions. Don't be afraid of what they say or be discouraged by the way they look at you, even though they are a rebellious family.

T4TAnd you human, you must not be afraid of them or afraid of what they say. Living among them will be like living in the midst of briers or scorpions, but do not be afraid of them. They are rebellious people [MTY], but do not allow them to cause you to become afraid.

LEBAnd you, son of man,[fn] you must not be afraid of them, and you must not be afraid of their words, because[fn] briers and thorns are with you, and you are sitting among scorpions. TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:6 Ezekiel’s ministry would be as painful as traversing a thicket of nettles and briers and stinging scorpions.

(Occurrence 0) son of man

(Some words not found in UHB: and=you(ms) son_of humankind not afraid from=them and,of,words,their not afraid that/for/because/then/when briers and,thorns DOM,you and=near/to scorpions you(ms) sit of,words,their not afraid and,at,looks,their not dismayed that/for/because/then/when house_of rebellious they(emph) )

God calls Ezekiel this to emphasize that Ezekiel is only a human being. God is eternal and powerful, but humans are not. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 2:1. Alternate translation: “mortal person” or “human”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) briers and thorns and … scorpions

(Some words not found in UHB: and=you(ms) son_of humankind not afraid from=them and,of,words,their not afraid that/for/because/then/when briers and,thorns DOM,you and=near/to scorpions you(ms) sit of,words,their not afraid and,at,looks,their not dismayed that/for/because/then/when house_of rebellious they(emph) )

These words describe the people of Israel who will not treat Ezekiel kindly when he tells them what God says.

(Occurrence 0) briers and thorns

(Some words not found in UHB: and=you(ms) son_of humankind not afraid from=them and,of,words,their not afraid that/for/because/then/when briers and,thorns DOM,you and=near/to scorpions you(ms) sit of,words,their not afraid and,at,looks,their not dismayed that/for/because/then/when house_of rebellious they(emph) )

Briers are bushes with sharp points on the branches. The sharp points on the branches are called thorns.

(Occurrence 0) scorpions

(Some words not found in UHB: and=you(ms) son_of humankind not afraid from=them and,of,words,their not afraid that/for/because/then/when briers and,thorns DOM,you and=near/to scorpions you(ms) sit of,words,their not afraid and,at,looks,their not dismayed that/for/because/then/when house_of rebellious they(emph) )

A scorpion is a small animal with two front claws, six legs, and a large tail with a poisonous stinger. Its sting is very painful.

(Occurrence 0) Do not fear their words

(Some words not found in UHB: and=you(ms) son_of humankind not afraid from=them and,of,words,their not afraid that/for/because/then/when briers and,thorns DOM,you and=near/to scorpions you(ms) sit of,words,their not afraid and,at,looks,their not dismayed that/for/because/then/when house_of rebellious they(emph) )

Alternate translation: “Do not be afraid of what they say.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) be dismayed by their faces

(Some words not found in UHB: and=you(ms) son_of humankind not afraid from=them and,of,words,their not afraid that/for/because/then/when briers and,thorns DOM,you and=near/to scorpions you(ms) sit of,words,their not afraid and,at,looks,their not dismayed that/for/because/then/when house_of rebellious they(emph) )

The words “their faces” are a metonym for the message the people express with their faces. Alternate translation: “lose your desire to serve me because of the way they look at you”
