10:6-16 The Lord responded to his people’s total apostasy by allowing crushing oppression (10:8). As usual, Israel cried out to the Lord for help (10:10) only after experiencing great distress (10:9). Normally, Israel’s cry led to divine intervention, but God’s decision to leave them to their chosen gods marks a shift in the cycle described in 2:10-19. Only when the Israelites put aside their foreign gods and served the Lord did he again act to redeem them (10:17–11:33).
God’s Grief over Apostasy
The God of the universe is grieved by his people’s misery (10:16; Hos 11:8-9). Even when repeatedly spurned, God’s love is more powerful than his wrath, and his compassion exceeds his indignation. That does not mean that his love negates his justice, however, and people will ultimately be judged in the end for their choices and actions (see 2Tim 4:1; Rev 20:11-15).
The entire era of the judges shows what happens in God’s heart when his people repeatedly spurn him. There comes a point, as in the time of Noah (Gen 6:5-7), when God’s patience runs out. For the Israelites who inhabited the land of the judges, that time had come. At one point, after the Israelites had turned to worship other gods and God had allowed them to be oppressed by their enemies, God responded to their plea for help by saying, “Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them rescue you” (Judg 10:14). Yet, even then, when Israel repeated its plea for mercy, rid themselves of their idols, and submitted to the Lord’s justice (10:10, 15-16), he provided help.
God longs for people to turn to him in repentance, not wanting anyone to be destroyed (2 Pet 3:9). And in his justice, he “makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus” (Rom 3:26). He has taken upon himself the grievous weight of our sin (see Isa 53:3-12; 2 Cor 5:19-21) and given us the opportunity to receive his grace.

The author is describing one event before describing an event that preceded it. In your translation, you may wish to relate these events in the order in which they happened. The UST models one way to do this.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וַֽיִּרְעֲצ֤וּ וַיְרֹֽצְצוּ֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה הַהִ֑יא
and,crushed and,crushed DOM sons_of Yisrael in/on/at/with,year the,that
The author is using the phrase in that year to mean implicitly that the Ammonites began to oppress all of the Israelites, not just the ones living east of the Jordan, as soon as Yahweh decided in his anger to punish and discipline the Israelites. If you decide to relate the events in this verse in the same order that the author does, you could indicate this explicitly in your translation. Alternate translation: “Right away the Ammonites began to shatter and crush all of the Israelites”
Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns
וַֽיִּרְעֲצ֤וּ וַיְרֹֽצְצוּ֙
and,crushed and,crushed
The pronoun they refers to the “sons of Ammon” or Ammonites, as the next verse makes clear. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “And the Ammonites shattered and crushed”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וַֽיִּרְעֲצ֤וּ וַיְרֹֽצְצוּ֙
and,crushed and,crushed
The author is speaking as if the Israelites had literally been an object such as a clay jar that could be shattered or a skull that could be crushed. (The author uses the same verb for “crush” in 9:53 to describe what the millstone did to Abimelek’s skull.) If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “And they afflicted and oppressed”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
וַֽיִּרְעֲצ֤וּ וַיְרֹֽצְצוּ֙
and,crushed and,crushed
The terms shattered and crushed mean similar things. The author is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: “And they severely oppressed”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
שְׁמֹנֶ֨ה עֶשְׂרֵ֜ה שָׁנָ֗ה אֶֽת־כָּל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן
eight teen year DOM all/each/any/every sons_of Yisrael which/who in/on/at/with,other_side the,Jordan
The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “For the previous 18 years, they had oppressed all the sons of Israel who were on the other side of the Jordan”
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן
in/on/at/with,other_side the,Jordan
The author is speaking from a vantage point west of the Jordan River, so the other side implicitly means the east side. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “were on the east side of the Jordan”
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
בְּאֶ֥רֶץ הָאֱמֹרִ֖י
in=land the=Emori
The author is using this possessive form to provide a more specific description of where these Israelites were living. He is referring to the land that the Israelites conquered from the Amorites. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “in the land that the Israelites conquered from the Amorites”
Note 9 topic: writing-background
אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּגִּלְעָֽד
which/who in/on/at/with,Gilead
The author is using this phrase to indicate that the land he is describing is the area that his readers probably know better as Gilead. Alternate translation: “which is now known as Gilead”
