Section 6:1–11: Jesus taught that he was Lord of the Sabbath

In the Old Testament, God commanded the Jewish people to rest on the seventh day of each week. They called this day the “Sabbath.” The Pharisees believed that Jewish people should not do any work at all on the Sabbath day. They made many strict rules about what people were not allowed to do on the Sabbath.

In this section, the Pharisees continued their disagreement with Jesus from Luke 5:33–39. The Pharisees questioned Jesus’ authority to change the old traditions. They focused on the laws and traditions concerning the Sabbath. Jesus stated and proved that he did indeed have greater authority than the Pharisees to decide what a person could do on the Sabbath. As a result, the Pharisees perceived Jesus as a threat to their own authority.

Paragraph 6:6–11

In this paragraph, Jesus demonstrated his authority over the Sabbath. He had just stated in 6:5 that he had the authority to decide what people could or could not do on the Sabbath day. When he healed the man with the shriveled hand, he confirmed that authority.

The Pharisees’ laws about the Sabbath day stated that it was work to heal a person whose life was not in danger on the Sabbath. So when Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath day, the Pharisees found a reason to accuse him.

But Jesus knew their thoughts: In Greek the word that the BSB translates as Jesus is an emphatic form of the pronoun “he.” This part of the verse changes the focus back to Jesus and indicates that he knew that the Pharisees wanted to accuse him. Express this focus in a natural way in your language. One way to do that is:

As for Jesus, he knew what they were thinking

knew their thoughts: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates here as knew their thoughts is the same phrase that it translates in 5:22a as “Knowing what they were thinking.” See how you translated it there and decide how to translate it here.

6:8b

and said to the man with the withered hand,

and he said to the man with the shriveled/shrunken hand,
so he told the man with the crippled hand

and said to the man: Some English versions connect 6:8b to 6:8a with the conjunction and (BSB) or with “so” (CEV). Others do not use a conjunction here (GNT). Connect 6:8a and 6:8b in the way that is most natural in your language.

6:8c

“Get up and stand among us.”

“Rise and stand in the center.”
“Stand up and come here where everyone can see you.”

Get up: The command Get up implies that the man was sitting down. He could have been sitting on the floor or on a bench. Another way to translate this is:

stand among us: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as stand among us is literally “stand into the middle.” Jesus wanted the man to move to the center of the synagogue where everyone could see him.

General Comment on 6:8b–c

In some languages, it may be natural to translate Jesus’ command as indirect speech. For example:

…he told the man to stand up where everyone could see him (CEV)

6:8d

So he got up and stood there.

So the man rose and stood there.
And the man stood up. (CEV)

So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So is most often translated as “and.” Some English versions translate it as “and” (RSV, NJB), and some do not translate it (GNT). This conjunction introduces what the man did when he obeyed Jesus’ command. Connect 6:8c and 6:8d in the way that is most natural in your language.

he got up and stood there: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as he got up and stood there is literally “and rising up, he stood.” You may need to make explicit where he stood. The BSB does this by adding the word there.

Make it clear in your translation that the man did what Jesus told him. For example:

So he rose and stood there. (NET)

So the man came forward. (NLT)

So the man came and stood in the center in front of everyone.

In some languages, the phrase got up and stood can be translated as one verb. For example:

And the man stood up. (CEV)
