TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:17-46 The tabulation yields the same number of qualified men (603,550) as mentioned in Exod 38:26. Exodus 12:37 and Num 11:21 give an approximate number of 600,000. These numbers have been interpreted in different ways. They might reflect the literal size of this army (cp. Exod 1:9-10); alternatively, the figures might be symbolic, projected backward from a later period, or simply misunderstood in translation. See also study note on Exod 12:37.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם

enrolled,those

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, 1:3 indicates that Moses and Aaron counted these men. Alternate translation: “those whom Moses and Aaron counted”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

לְמַטֵּ֣ה

of,tribe

Here Moses is using the possessive form to describe a tribe that descended from Reuben. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “of the tribe that descended from”

Note 3 topic: translate-numbers

שִׁשָּׁ֧ה וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת

six and,forty thousand and=five hundreds

Alternate translation: “forty-six thousand five hundred men”
