TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:40-51 There were 273 more firstborn sons in Israel (in the non-Levite tribes) than there were Levite males (cp. 3:39). Because the Levites served as substitutes for the firstborn of Israel (3:41; see study note on 3:11-13), a redemption price (3:48) of five pieces of silver (3:47) had to be paid for each of the extra firstborn sons (3:46; cp. Lev 27:6). It is not clear who covered this cost. This provision for a special class of substitutes points to Christ’s role as a substitute; through his death, Christ paid the redemption price for all humanity (see Mark 10:45; Gal 3:13; Eph 1:7; Heb 9:15).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וַיִּקַּ֣ח מֹשֶׁ֔ה

and=he/it_took Mosheh

And here indicates that what follows is a result of what came before. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a result of what came before. Alternate translation: “As a result, Moses took”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

כֶּ֣סֶף הַפִּדְי֑וֹם

money the,redemption

Here Moses uses the possessive form to describe the silver that was the ransom. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the silver, that is, the ransom”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הָעֹ֣דְפִ֔ים עַ֖ל

the,in_excess on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in

See how you translated this phrase in 3:46.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

פְּדוּיֵ֥י הַלְוִיִּֽם

redeemed the,Levites

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the ones whom the Levites ransomed”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

פְּדוּיֵ֥י

redeemed

Here, ransomed refers to paying for lives by substituting them with other lives, whereas ransom earlier in the verse referred to paying for lives with money. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “the ones substituted by” or “the ones who were replaced by”
