UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

דַּבֵּר֮ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אִ֣ישׁ

speak to/towards sons_of Yisrael (a)_man

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [Speak to the sons of Israel. Say to them that a man]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

אִ֣ישׁ אֽוֹ־אִשָּׁ֗ה כִּ֤י יַעֲשׂוּ֙ מִכָּל־חַטֹּ֣את הָֽאָדָ֔ם לִמְעֹ֥ל מַ֖עַל בַּיהוָ֑ה וְאָֽשְׁמָ֖ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִֽוא

(a)_man or woman/wife that/for/because/then/when commits from=all sins_of the=humankind by,acting_unfaithfully sin against,Yahweh and,it_will_be_guilty the=living_creatures the=that

In this verse, Yahweh alternates between singular and plural forms. He does this because the instructions relate to any person. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use just the singular or plural throughout this verse. Alternate translation: [A man or woman, when he or she does from all the sins of the man to be unfaithful in unfaithfulness against Yahweh, then that person is guilty] or [Men or women, when they do from all the sins of the man to be unfaithful in unfaithfulness against Yahweh, then those people are guilty]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

חַטֹּ֣את הָֽאָדָ֔ם

sins_of the=humankind

Here, Yahweh could be using the possessive form to refer to sins that are: (1) committed against a man. Alternate translation: [the sins against a man] (2) committed by a man. Alternate translation: [the sins by a man]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

הָֽאָדָ֔ם

the=humankind

Here the masculine term man has a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use language in your translation that is clearly inclusive of both men and women. Alternate translation: [the human]

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

לִמְעֹ֥ל

by,acting_unfaithfully

The words translated as to be unfaithful indicate that what follows is a result of what came before. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a result of what came before. Alternate translation: [with the result that they are unfaithful]

Note 6 topic: writing-poetry

לִמְעֹ֥ל מַ֖עַל

by,acting_unfaithfully sin

Moses is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of saying this. Alternate translation: [to be very unfaithful]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

מַ֖עַל

sin

The phrase unfaithfulness expresses an abstract idea. If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of unfaithfulness, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [in an unfaithful way]
