TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:1–10:10 These legal matters were to ensure the purity of the Israelites, their priesthood, and the Tabernacle. Such regulations drew constant attention to ancient Israel’s identity as a theocracy of which Moses was the primary spokesman.

5:1-31 These laws concern purity, restitution, and marital faithfulness.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) if she is defiled because she has committed

(Some words not found in UHB: and,drink,her DOM the=waters and,come_about if defiled and,she_was_unfaithful unfaithfulness in/on/at/with,husband,her and,go in/on/at/with,her the=waters the,brings_a_curse as,bitter and,swell abdomen,her and,waste_away thigh,her and,become the=woman as,curse in/on/at/with,midst people,her )

This can be written in active form. Alternate translation: “if she has defined herself by committing”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) committed a sin

(Some words not found in UHB: and,drink,her DOM the=waters and,come_about if defiled and,she_was_unfaithful unfaithfulness in/on/at/with,husband,her and,go in/on/at/with,her the=waters the,brings_a_curse as,bitter and,swell abdomen,her and,waste_away thigh,her and,become the=woman as,curse in/on/at/with,midst people,her )

Here the “sin” refers specifically to committing adultery. The meaning of this statement can be made clear. Alternate translation: “committed adultery”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

(Occurrence 0) Her abdomen will swell and her thigh will waste away

(Some words not found in UHB: and,drink,her DOM the=waters and,come_about if defiled and,she_was_unfaithful unfaithfulness in/on/at/with,husband,her and,go in/on/at/with,her the=waters the,brings_a_curse as,bitter and,swell abdomen,her and,waste_away thigh,her and,become the=woman as,curse in/on/at/with,midst people,her )

This could mean: (1) that the woman will become unable to have children or (2) that the woman’s pregnancy will end too early and the baby will die. Here the word “thigh” is a polite way of referring to the woman’s womb or her private parts. See how you translated these concepts in Numbers 5:21.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) The woman will be cursed among her people

(Some words not found in UHB: and,drink,her DOM the=waters and,come_about if defiled and,she_was_unfaithful unfaithfulness in/on/at/with,husband,her and,go in/on/at/with,her the=waters the,brings_a_curse as,bitter and,swell abdomen,her and,waste_away thigh,her and,become the=woman as,curse in/on/at/with,midst people,her )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Her people will curse her”
