OET (OET-RV)Then Shemuel asked Yishay, “Is this all your sons?”
¶ Well, there’s just the youngest,” he answeredbut you see, he’s out looking after the flock.”[fn]
¶ “Send for him,” Shemuel instructed him, “because we won’t do anything else until he gets here.”

16:11 We deliberately left the word ‘flock’ here (rather than ‘sheep’), because although young David is always thought of as ‘the shepherd boy’ in English culture, in the middle-East, goats are probably a more important part of the flock than sheep.

16:11 Or, the youngest.

¶ “Well, there's still the youngest,” Jesse replied, “but he is out looking after the sheep.”
¶ “Send for him and bring him here because we will not sit down and eat[fn] until he gets here,” Samuel told Jesse.

16:11 “Sit down and eat”: literally, “surround.” This is usually thought to mean to surround a table before sitting down, but it could also mean to “surround” an altar, i.e. the beginning of the sacrificial rituals.

T4TThen Samuel asked Jesse, “Do you have any other sons?” Jesse replied, “My youngest son is not here; he is out in the fields taking care of the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send someone to bring him here! We will not sit down to eat until he gets here.”

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

16:1-23 David was Saul’s replacement. There are striking similarities between the two: Samuel anointed both. Neither was pursuing the position. Both were unlikely candidates (Saul was from the smallest tribe; David was the youngest son). Both were impressive in appearance (9:2; 16:12). And the Spirit came mightily on each when he was anointed king (10:10; 11:6; 16:13). The key difference was that David was “a man after [God’s] own heart” (13:14; cp. 16:7), while Saul was not.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

and=see/lo/see!

See how you translated the term behold in [2:31](../02/31.md). Alternate translation: [but this is the situation]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

שִׁלְחָ֣ה וְקָחֶ֔נּוּ כִּ֥י לֹא־נָסֹ֖ב עַד־בֹּא֥וֹ פֹֽה

send, and,bring,him that/for/because/then/when not sit_down until comes,he here

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Since we will not go around until he comes here, send and get him]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לֹא־נָסֹ֖ב

not sit_down

Samuel means that they will not go around the table to sit down to eat. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [we will not go around the table] or [we will not sit down to eat]
