In an earlier letter to Paul, the Corinthians had mentioned some problems and asked him some questions. There are no longer any copies of this letter, so we can only guess what they wrote by reading Paul’s answers. Apparently some of the questions the Corinthians had asked were about marriage and sex. In this section Paul discussed these topics. He wrote about sexual intercourse, divorce, marrying again after a person’s husband or wife dies, and never marrying.
From the way Paul talked, it appears that the Corinthians were thinking that if believers want to be holy, they should abstain from sexual relations. The Corinthians were wondering if married people should sleep together, if Christians who were married to non-Christians should divorce them, and if Christians should get married. Paul gave them some wise teaching on each of these topics. In 7:1–16 he addressed Christians who were married. In 7:17–24 he wrote about his general rule for Christians: Remain as you are. In 7:25–38 he taught Christians who were not married. In 7:39–40 he addressed women whose husbands had died.

Paul now began to talk to the believers about those people in their group who were not married. Perhaps some of the Corinthian believers were thinking: “A person will be more holy and please God more if he remains unmarried.” Paul agreed that there are good reasons to remain unmarried. But he did not believe that it was a sin to get married. Paul allowed each person to choose for himself.

Because of the present crisis: The Greek word that the BSB translates as crisis refers to a time of trouble or distress. At that time many unbelievers were persecuting believers and making life hard for them. Other ways to translate this include:
The present time is a time of trouble. So… (NCV)
We are now going through hard times. (CEV)
I think it is good for a man to remain as he is.
I advise that you believers remain as you are.
I suggest it is a good idea for a man to remain as he is.
I think: The Greek words that the BSB translates as I think are more literally “Therefore I judge this good.” Since the word “good” occurs again later in the same verse, most English versions avoid using it here. Here is another way to translate this:

it is good for a man to remain as he is: The Greek words that the BSB translates as it is good for a man to remain as he is are literally “good for a man to be thus.” By “thus” Paul was probably referring forward to what he was about to say in 7:27. In other words, believing men who were married should remain married, and believing men who were not married should remain unmarried. However, what he said did not exclude women. The same was true of them. Another way to translate this is to follow the model of the NJB and use the third-person plural “people”:
it is good for people to stay as they are (NJB)
The BSB has reordered the Greek clauses in this verse. The Greek has the words meaning “I think” at the beginning of the verse, as does the RSV:
26bI think that 26ain view of the present distress 26bit is well for a person to remain as he is. (RSV)
These verse parts could also be reordered in the following way:
26bI think it is good for a person to remain as he is, 26abecause of the present distress.
Translate this in the order that is natural in your language.

Here, Therefore does not refer back to how Paul has received mercy from God. Rather, Therefore introduces the “opinion” that Paul said he was going to “give” ([7:25](../07/25.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express Therefore with a word or phrase that introduces a statement that one has already spoken about. Alternate translation, changing the comma to a colon or a period: [Here is my opinion:]

Here Paul repeats good, because in his language it was a natural way to remind the reader that he had already said this is good. If your language would not use repetition in this way, you could use only one good. Alternate translation: [that, because of the coming distress, it is good]

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate rearrange the sentence and represent the emphasis on the coming distress in another way. Alternate translation: [that it is good for a man to remain as he is. This is because of the coming distress]
