OET (OET-RV)Then they must tell those elders, “Our son is stubborn and rebellious and pays no attention to what we say—he’s a glutton and a drunkard.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

General Information:

Moses continues speaking to the people of Israel as if they were one man, so all instances of “you” are singular.

(Occurrence 0) This son of ours

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_say to/towards elders_of his_city_of,of son_of,our this stubborn and,rebellious not,he obey to,our_of,voice glutton and,a_drunkard )

Alternate translation: [Our son]

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_say to/towards elders_of his_city_of,of son_of,our this stubborn and,rebellious not,he obey to,our_of,voice glutton and,a_drunkard )

Here “voice” is a metonym for what a person says or a synecdoche for the whole person. Alternate translation: [he will not do what we tell him to do] or [he will not obey us] (See also: figs-synecdoche)

(Occurrence 0) a glutton

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_say to/towards elders_of his_city_of,of son_of,our this stubborn and,rebellious not,he obey to,our_of,voice glutton and,a_drunkard )

a person who drinks too much alcohol and gets drunk often

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:20 Calling someone a glutton and a drunkard was probably a proverbial cliché suggesting self-indulgence and laziness. Such a son was a good-for-nothing who rebelled against his parents and thus also against the community and divine authority (see Prov 23:20-21).
