OET (OET-LV) If/because I_will_bring_it into the_soil which I_swore to_ancestors_of_its flowing_of milk and_honey and_he/it_will_eat and_it_will_be_satisfied and_it_will_grow_fat and_it_will_turn to gods other and_they_will_serve_them and_they_will_spurn_me and_it_will_break DOM covenant_of_my.
OET (OET-RV) When I bring them to the land that I promised to their ancestors, flowing with milk and honey, and they eat well and become satisfied and fat, then they’ll turn to other gods and they’ll serve them, and they’ll despise me and break our agreement.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לַאֲבֹתָ֗יו
to,ancestors_of,its
Here Yahweh is using the term fathers to mean “ancestors.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly as modeled in the UST.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
זָבַ֤ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ
flowing_of milk and,honey
See how you translated the phrase “a land flowing with milk and honey” in [6:3](../06/03.md). Alternate translation: [a rich and fertile land] or [a very productive land]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְשָׂבַ֖ע וְדָשֵׁ֑ן
(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when I,will_bring_it to/near the=soil which/who swore to,ancestors_of,its flowing_of milk and,honey and=he/it_will_eat and,it_will_be_satisfied and,it_will_grow_fat and,it_will_turn to/towards ʼElohīm other and,they,will_serve_them and,they,will_spurn_me and,it_will_break DOM covenant_of,my )
Here Yahweh is speaking of the Israelites as if they would become physically fat. He means that they will become prosperous and comfortable. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and becomes satisfied and prosperous]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וּפָנָ֞ה אֶל־אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֲחֵרִים֙
and,it_will_turn to/towards ʼElohīm other
See how you translated the similar expression “he will have turned to other gods” in [verse 18](../31/18.md).
Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns
וַעֲבָד֔וּם וְנִ֣אֲצ֔וּנִי
and,they,will_serve_them and,they,will_spurn_me
Unlike most of the other pronouns in verses 16–20, here the words for they are plural even though they also refer to the singular noun in verse 16 which is translated “this people.” See the discussion of this issue in the introduction to this chapter for more information. If you chose to translate the pronouns from verse 16 forward as plural, you may want to use plural pronouns throughout this section as is modeled in the UST.
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְהֵפֵ֖ר אֶת־בְּרִיתִֽי
and,it_will_break DOM (Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when I,will_bring_it to/near the=soil which/who swore to,ancestors_of,its flowing_of milk and,honey and=he/it_will_eat and,it_will_be_satisfied and,it_will_grow_fat and,it_will_turn to/towards ʼElohīm other and,they,will_serve_them and,they,will_spurn_me and,it_will_break DOM covenant_of,my )
See how you translated the same expression “break my covenant” in [verse 16](../31/16.md).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
